Hi everyone,

sorry to have to ask the same question again but i can't find the post i wrote a few weeks ago so I dont' know if anyone replied!

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some info on where abouts I could get a traditional tattoo done around koh samui (preferably by a monk). However I also need to know if it's likely any would tattoo a woman, as I've heard that Monks can't touch females. And another thing, i'm plannying on getting the omm mani padhme hum on my arm, does anyone know if this would be considered offensive to bhuddist considering I'm a westerner?

If anyone has some info I'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys! and thanx to anyone who replied to my last post too!!

I don't understand how you could justify that westerners would get offended by me having a tattoo that signifies compassion. if you mean that people would be offended merely because I'm a young woman with a tattoo then you're also very mistaken. Could you please explain yourself?

Could you please explain yourself?

i'll do my best.

whilst tattoos are very fashionable these days and on young or youngish skin can look reasonably good if done discretely.

however fashions change , and with eastern philosophical mantras tatood all over your body you will be stuck with something permanent that forever marks you down as a fashion victim of the period.

like the old geysers you see around with faded harley davidson tattoos on their arms.

secondly , tattoos on the over 40's dont look too good at all to my eyes anyway.

plenty of tattood grandmothers on the beaches these days and the designs are somewhat hidden in the wrinkles and folds of flesh that come naturally and in many cases gracefully with advancing age.

tattood oldsters are not a pretty sight.

would you wear a 1960's beehive hairdo now ??

when you are older , you might find that younger people find you as an object of ridicule.

well, according to my 16 year old niece anyway.

thats why i say "think on"

Atta girl Bella,

Hold him accountable for his words of dubious wisdom. I for one am a westerner who appreciates the artistic beauty of a well done tattoo. Having said that, I have also seen the other side of the tattoo coin. Can not comment regarding the appropriateness/acceptance of your intended tattoo but I seriously doubt you will ever find a monk to do it, last I heard they are forbidden from touching females, at least in public that is.

Happy staining

Mainly because monk tattoos look like they have been drawn by a six year old suffering from the shakes. you cant achive enlightenment by being stuck with inky bamboo :o

I'm sure the tattood grandmother wouldn't have listened to the so called 'wise' words of you all, isn't it so that everyone should experience and make his own life, which is different for all of us and as personal as your opinions?

Who said this female is young? Who said this female is not knowing what she's doing or isn't aware of the consequences? She just asked WHERE so why are you guys giving all kinds of real grandpa's warnings instead of showing any directions?

Anyway, if Bella really is young, and as this is a fashion thing, she'll not be the only one with a wrinkled tattoo at age 66.

I personally do not know about monks tattooing in Samui, but I've seen the monks tattooing men in Nakhon Pathom at Buddhist Festivals. Maybe you should go over there for directions or look for advise in a nuns' temple? I'm sure all is possible in Thailand, let us know ok!

And another thing, i'm plannying on getting the omm mani padhme hum on my arm,

how about "robbie williams" across the forehead and "full moon party 2005" across the back of the neck , or "thai visa" in 17th century khmer script.

should look great down the bingo hall in 2045 , :D

stick with t-shirts bella , as least you can take em off when you're sick of it.

remember the words of my teenage niece when she saw a heavily tatted oldster walking on the beach , couldn't make out exactly what they were because they were wobbling a bit and some of the small print was hidden in skin folds.

"eeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh! thats fukkin disgustin that is " :o:D

get a tattoo and get a monk to pray over it !!

those monks are even more cynical than i am !!

Thats wath i made, i'm so happy now because it change my life !

i'm sorry "big buddha" , sorry for my aggressive cynicism , but if thats all it took to change your life then you couldnt have had much of a life.

i'm sorry , i mean you no harm , i'm glad you are happy now.

i personally dislike permanent tattoos be they on young or old skin, find it looks kinda dirty :D

but then that's just me, i like dogs and they can be very dirty too :o

so each to his own! :D

you're all absolutely right , happiness is a commodity in short supply these days and if you can find it at the end of a short sharp stick covered in <deleted> wielded by a shaking senile samui spiritualist then go for it. !!!!

Tax,

Most of your posts I like a lot since they show good common sense.

However, on this one I disagree. I love tattoos and even think on old folks they look great, they tell tattoo history to me and it makes me interested in that specific persons tattoo history.

As already mentioned, to each his own.

As for Bella, there's a guy in Chaweng Noi (South Chaweng) on the road from First Bungalow to the ring road who advertises with trad tatts.

well , as you can probably guess i'm not a big fan of tattoos , i think they are something of a desecration of the body , and whilst to my male eye , a discretely tattooed girl can be alluring , hinting at abandon, youthfulness and freedom , on the older body they seem out of place and to me they signal immaturity and irresponsibility.

but you have got to search for and try and obtain whatever gives you fullfilment and if body art does it for you then fair enough.

however i would urge caution and second thoughts before having lengthy religious tracts or even short religious tracts permanently etched into your arms.

peoples views and philosophies change during life and what might seem like the only true path and must have souvenir whilst holidaying on koh samui may very well turn out to be a mistake 10 years down the line.

once again , forgive my sneering cynicism , its mostly wind up , but i do hold by my main points.

Hi Tax,

Your main points are your points and you got all the right to stick to them.

As you can guess, I do like tattoos and actually have several books on/about them and I don't think that tattoos are out of place.

The majority of folks that I know are proud of their tattoos (yep, not all, some regret what they did, due to being young and 'silly', kind of your 'warning') and will still be proud in 10 or 20 years down the line.

If you got good work done, people will come up to you and ask about it.

I do agree tho that I've seen some tattoos that raised my eyebrows, but I fail to see why tatts on an older person signal immaturity and irresponsibility? Fail to see that connection.

Hi Bella :

Just look up Buddhist Tattoo as well as Fortean news. There are several websites that can add to your thinking. But just check these out first. I think that being a woman may not be problem but read these web sites and others. They will tell you why it might not be a problem. Also I have a old lonely Planet that discusses the tattoo festival happening once a year in March at temple not too far from Bangkok. The name of the temple is Wat Bang Phra. Note in your research that woman often get invisible tattoos ; I think done with Coconut juice. This might solve the problem of revealing a possibly unwanted picture on your body years later. Hmm. you might also consider how deep you feel about being a Buddhist. If this feeling is strong then the tattoo may add to the aesthetics of your belief and possibly enhance the quality of your life. On the other hand, as the other gentleman said give it some more thought as you do your research. Its important I think to find out these things for your self because it build a basis to do the thinking or whatever.

often get invisible tattoos

there you go , get your spiritual tattoo done invisibly.

but then if they are not in everybody elses face nobody would know you've been to samui , nobody would ask you about it , would they , and thats the whole point.

they are souvenirs.

spirituality..........my as5.
