June 10, 200917 yr Hi All, Congratulation 'fabianfred' well done. Please choose a topic for our ' Photo Challenge #5' Thanking you all for taking part in the Thai Landscape Challenge, shame that more members did not enter, could that have been because of the rain? Yours truly, Kan Win Edited June 11, 200917 yr by Kan Win
June 10, 200917 yr Thank you all for your votes..... I would like to choose HDR for the next subject..... If you have never done it......download the Photomatix program free...and post pix with the watermark showing is OK. Tip... I usually shoot hand-held with my camera set to AE Bracket at One full f-stop so i get one under, and one over, and normal. Photomatix will align pix for you........ best to use Aperture priority and have a fast shutter....using an exposure which alters the aperture can affect the DOF. Also if you have an old pic which looks OK....but only one shot....then make a copy of it in windows explorer...and load the copy and original into Photomatix....it can still give nice results.....
June 11, 200917 yr Congrats fabianfred, great pictures. The challenges in order were: 1. Thai People 2. Thai Food 3. Dogs Songkran (was not a Challenge) 4. Thai Landscapes Interesting to see how HDR will be received as challenge #5. Personally I love messing around with HDR but feel that as a challenge topic it might be a bit limiting for some. I would suggest a topic that anyone with any camera would be able to shoot a pic and enter it into the 'Challenge' without having to learn new processes and download additional software. Pseudo HDR using single images is not technically HDR btw. I jotted down a list of 'Challenge' ideas on the Landscape voting thread and left out some topics that would require additional hardware/software. Participation should be a lot better than it is in the challenges, I think that getting 'technical' would limit participation even further. Of course the idea of the 'Challenges' is exactly that it should be a challenge. To learn new techniques and processes, to get out (or stay in) and take photos and exercise our creativity. Maybe a monthly 'Technical Challenge' would be a good idea for the more technically inspired among us? and choose topics for the normal challenges that would enable anyone to enter. I'll repost the list of ideas I wrote as that thread is now closed. I was looking forward to entering this next competition, that is until I read the subject... ..This poor old fella doesn't even know what HDR means, unless at a guess it is Harley Davidson Rider ?? If it is, can I claim an exemption and photograph my wife on her Honda Wave.? Confused......
June 11, 200917 yr ..This poor old fella doesn't even know what HDR means, unless at a guess it is Harley Davidson Rider ??If it is, can I claim an exemption and photograph my wife on her Honda Wave.? I just added a HDR section in the pinned topic. Questions & Answers Looks like a lot of fun but also a bit intimidating.
June 11, 200917 yr I understand that HDR is a bit of a challenge for the happy snappers...but the Photomatix software IS free....and it can turn some quite ordinary pix into something much better..... and no need to use anything like Photoshop....... Even the pseudo HDR (tone-mapping) is easy and no need to mess with the many controls in a Photoshop program....with Photomatix it is just easy sliders ...to see the results instantly. I love harleys too...so maybe we could make the subject Harleys (and their clones) and nothing older than a month..to get people out there snapping.... but then those stuck on the farm would complain too.... I know many here at TV are not actually in Thailand...so a Thai subject would be restricting too
June 11, 200917 yr Here we are then - no idea what I'm doing but lets have a go Canon G10 and a great deal of p*****g about in Photomatix and CS3 1 shot ( this morning in Hua Hin) with exposure adjusted by 1.5 stops either way p.s. V-Rod 1200 cc Harley Davidson p.p.s I just realised that by using the tone mapping ONLY in the trial version of Photomatix (as I did) you don't get the watermarks! June 11, 200917 yr Author Hi 'fabianfred' and members. I have decided to open a separeate thread for this type of Photography as it is a specialised topic and in my mind "why should our members who Kan not do a HDR suffer and wait unilt the next 'Challenge'". 'fabianfred' please set the rules, thank you. Yours truly, only here to help folks out. Kan Win

Very nice too.... i do like the HDR images like this one which are 'subtle'...as well as the more easily recognised type. good bit of steel there too. Tip....tripod is best for most accurate images...and five exposures of 2+,1+,0,1-,2- gives the best possible range
June 11, 200917 yr Author Also if you have an old pic which looks OK....but only one shot....then make a copy of it in windows explorer...and load the copy and original into Photomatix....it can still give nice results..... This is against the Challenge Rules, hence 'Fabianfred HDR Photo Challenge' so Fred you set the rules please in your own Challenge. Thanking you all. Yours truly, Kan Win
June 11, 200917 yr Rules....!!! I declare there are no rules...... no limit to the number of images........true HDR and pseudo (tone mapped) are allowed. Fill ya boots!
June 11, 200917 yr Author But surely one rule must still be 'All "Entries" must be your own photos'. Yeeeees lets Rock and Roll The Lake - Kanchanaburi (1 photo RAW) Wat Tum Sua Temple - Kanchanaburi (3 photos RAW) Bridge over the River Kwai (Khwae) (1 photo RAW) Tha last one totally over cooked I know, just tried something else. Yours turly, Kan Win
June 11, 200917 yr <snip> nice pix...are they all going into the clouds one too...lol? Edited June 11, 200917 yr by Kan Win
June 11, 200917 yr Author No way Wait and see as these photos are too "Old" for the Clouds Challege #5. Now you know why I asked you for Your Rules Fred. Yours as always, Win in Kan
June 12, 200917 yr 2nd crack at this HDR stuff - not sure I'm getting there tho! Shot 4 days ago so well within whatever rules we're applying
June 12, 200917 yr Author One RAW photo processed in Photomatix Pro 3 and added border in ADCSee Pro 2.5 Yours truly, Kan Win
June 13, 200917 yr Whale Rock No one ever said HDR was restricted to color.... I didn't try to remove the graininess since I like that in black and white photos. In fact, in some b/w portraits I have taken, I have introduced grain for effect.
June 13, 200917 yr 2nd crack at this HDR stuff - not sure I'm getting there tho! Shot 4 days ago so well within whatever rules we're applying very beautiful colours.... and nice bokeh too...(as they like to say)

June 17, 200917 yr I like the old style hand-tinted look this one has got from the HDR process Edited June 17, 200917 yr by fabianfred
June 17, 200917 yr Very nice indeed. Looking at the halos above the trees maybe a touch overdone. I find the square on the riverbank slightly distracting, but that's a matter of personal taste. Was this created with a single shot? Nonetheless a great image.
June 17, 200917 yr Thanks for your comment. This was three exposures...hand-held....auto ISO bracket. At first i was put off by the dark sky...but then seeing the tones of the rest reminded me of those old lithographic pictures which have been hand-tinted and often illustrated books about asia at the turn of the last century. I could have taken this into photoshop and blended the sky to get rid of the muddy look...but decided I like it just the way it is now. I actually liked the square fishing net being left to dry out there...... Edited June 17, 200917 yr by fabianfred
June 18, 200917 yr Author The Lake One shot. Yours truly, Kan Win P.S. One shot works fine for me as tree branches and plants move in a split second 'fabianfred'
