Thailand orders suspension of entertainment services in Pattaya to curb A/H1N1 outbreak

www.chinaview.cn 2009-06-11 20:34:14

BANGKOK, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Public Health Ministry on Thursday ordered service suspension of 17 entertainment places in resort town Pattaya in a central province of Chonburi in a bid to curb the A/H1N1 flu virus outbreak, the Thai News Agency reported.

The order of the temporary closure has followed the earlier announcement by the Ministry that now totally there are 21 confirmed A/H1N1 flu patients in Chonburi, the destination of tourists around the world.

Also, some 420,000 pills of antiviral Camiflu have been distributed to Chonburi's provincial public health office, said Somchai Chakraphan, director-general of the Disease Control Department, the Health Ministry, the website by Thai-language newspaper Krungthep Turakij reported.

The provincial public health office will later re-distribute them to hotels and risk-affected areas, he said.

On May 12, the Health Ministry announced the country's first two confirmed A/H1N1 flu cases, and by June 10 the country has totally 46 confirmed A/H1N1 flu patients.

According to the World Health Organization, Thailand ranked 33rd as the country that has been hit by the deadly new virus.

Which 17 ? and why 17 ? does anyone know.

I guess that they will all be Disco's where many people gather and the Flu virus can rapidly spread. Quite a few Disco workers were found to be infected earlier this week according to another thread.

Cheers, Rick

Re-distribute drugs to hotels? Why not to pharmacies and doctors? :)

Ouch.

Another nail in Pattaya's coffin when this hits the international news.

Can't recall any other place in the world where they had to resolve to closing down public entertainment venues!

21 Discotheque Staff In Pattaya Infected With H1N1

BANGKOK, June 11 (Bernama) -- Twenty-one employees of a discotheque in the entertainment city of Pattaya were infected with the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, bringing the total number of reported cases in Thailand to 46.

Thai Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparada said they were found to have been infected after the authorities conducted tests following a report that two Taiwanese tourists got the infection during their visit to the city.

Among the new cases were four students, forcing the Saint Gabriel College in Bangkok to close the school for one week.

While most of the confirmed cases involved Thais who had returned from the United States, an 11-year-old who had not travelled overseas was also infected, together with his mother.

A British national who was on transit at the Suvarnabhumi Airport on his way to Cambodia was hospitalised after tests confirmed he had the H1N1 virus.

According to the World Health Organisation, 74 countries have officially reported 27,737 cases of H1N1, including 141 deaths.

Guerrero state, home to the famous Acapulco beach resort, also kept bars and discos closed, while Jalisco, in western Mexico, announced the closure of many public places on Friday amid investigations into three suspect deaths.

It seems the bar closings are being done on a need to know basis. As of yet there has been no further public mention of this in the news. This does appear at odds with common thought but perfectly normal in Thailand.

One Thai Visa forum member went to a Disco last night only to be told it was not open for tourist, only open for Thai because of the Swine Flu outbreak in Pattaya. It will be very interesting to see how this "Flu Situation" plays out in the media and in private.

My interpretation is that Taiwanese Nationals came to Thailand healthy and became infected here, going home sick. The spin on the story is a few Foreign Nationals came here sick already and infected some locals. This suits the current government and local administration as long as this is the end of the story. I for one see it as only the beginning, there is no need to panic but one has to be a complete idiot to ignore this situation.

What about the 50+ gogo bars, surely thats a big risk too especialy the thai dancers trying to get money out of punters and doing a deep tongue technique??????

Maybe there are about 10 that are busy so it does keep the odds down lol.The biggest problem is the idiotic leaders of the Provinces here,i could well imagine that the Tourism board would try to keep things as quiet as possible and not give a fig about who contracts it.The top people and hi-so will get the medicine not the vast majority of the country. You can imagine some of the new ladies and men from other parts of Thailand coming to the tourist areas that already have this flu.

More panic about nothing. It's a flu - big deal. If you look at the stats, in the whole world 141 have died out of 28,000 cases reported. The latest figures I've seen put the "swine-flu" deaths in the US at 27 out of more than 13,000 cases reported.

No one has bothered to give details about the condition of the people who died, but people die from the flu in large numbers every year. This is probably a push to improve drug company profits.

Here's an interesting blog I found:

Regular Flu Kills 36,000 Americans Every Year

Published: April 28th, 2009

Something to put the swine flu outbreak in perspective: The regular seasonal flu has killed more than 13,000 people in the U.S. since January, and kills between 250,000 and 500,000 worldwide annually.

Update: The numbers are from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A quotation:

The number of influenza-associated (i.e., flu-related) deaths varies from year to year because flu seasons often fluctuate in length and severity. CDC estimated that about 36,000 people died of flu-related causes each year, on average, during the 1990s in the United States. This figure includes people dying from complications of flu. This estimate came from a 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Medication Association (JAMA), which looked at the 1990-91 through the 1998-99 flu seasons. Statistical modeling was used to estimate how many flu-related deaths occurred among people whose underlying cause of death on their death certificate was listed as a respiratory or circulatory disease. During these years, the number of estimated deaths ranged from 17,000 to 52,000.

In 2009, CDC published additional estimates of flu-related deaths comparing different methods, including the methods used in the 2003 JAMA study. The seasons studied included the 1993-94 through the 2002-03 flu seasons. Results from this study showed that during this time period, 36,171 flu-related deaths occurred per year, on average.

As a PS to my above post.

I've just seen a statement by US health officials that about of the people (in the US) who died from Swine flu were previously healthy people.

.....so now we can guess that about 70 healthy people have died from the swine flu world wide out of 28,000.

This is truly frightening!

In the US 13,000 have already died from regular flu this year and only 13 from swine-flu.

Go figure.
