In Thomas W. Gething and Pongsuwan T. Bilmes Thai Reader series, there's a pattern that I haven't seen in any of my study materials thus far and I can't find an example in Higbie & Thinsan's Thai Reference Grammar.......

ทำความสะอาดบ้านเป็นห้องๆไป

and

จะเดินทางไปค้นคว้าในจังหวัดต่างๆเป็นจังหวัดๆไป

I'm guessing that the translation is: to clean room by room; to travel to various provinces to do research, province by province.

Would I be correct to say คุณต้องอ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นหน้าๆไป You have to read this book page by page.

or

ผมอยู่เป็นวันๆไป I live day by day.

Thanks for any assistance.

On the accompanying mp3 files for these stories I notice that there is a slight pause just before the word is repeated.....unlike when ๆ is normally used.

For example, ทำความสะอาดบ้านเป็นห้อง...ห้องไป

and

จะเดินทางไปค้นคว้าในจังหวัดต่างๆเป็นจังหวัด...จังหวัดไป

Similar meaning word:

ทีละ also gives the meaning one by one.

ie.

จะเดินทางไปค้นคว้าในจังหวัดต่างๆ ทีละจังหวัด

จะเดินทางไปค้นคว้าในจังหวัดต่างๆ เป็นจังหวัดๆ ไป

Both sentences mean many provinces until the goal is finish but don't tell how many exactly and don't neccessarily mean all provinces.

Repaating word in speaking informal language can give different meaning:

รถของเขาสีดำๆ literally = His car is black black.

If you speak both the word ดำ in similar plain tone = You are not sure that it is REAL black or you just mean it's QUITE black.

BUT if you stress on the first ดำ that it sounds ด้ำ and in the sentence it sounds ด้ำ ดำ = You think/know it is SO black.
