Hi, anybody know the approx. value of these birds? I may have to pay for one if my dogs get hold of my neighbour's rooster. They say I'd be looking at 20k baht. I can only assume it will be used for cockfighting so the price is likely based on potential future earnings. I can't imagine why anyone would let a bird worth so much money run around freely exposed to all manner of threats. But then again, this is Thailand. Input greatly appreciated...

One of my colleagues keeps birds for fighting and he has just sold one recently to a guy in BKK for 20k, obviously not every bird is worth that much but many are and more too. He actually posts videos of his birds fighting on youtube then waits for offers. When a price is agreed and he receives payment he puts it in a box and gives it to the bus driver to take to BKK or wherever where the buyer will be waiting.

Yes, its possible. And I am not sure why you think your dog would go for it. Why would someone let their dog run around loose killing their neighbor's animals?

Bit of a presumption sbk, maybe because the bird entered his yard. :) One of our dogs made quick work of a couple of chickens that came over the fence into our property. Neighbor never said a thing because she was at fault for not fencing better. I suspect if that is the OPs case, then the OP shouldn't be held accountable (that is if the bird enters a fenced in compound).

I taught my dogs to never kill chickens. I don't live in a fenced in yard, neither do my neighbors. In fact, I don't know anyone who fences in their chickens (or their dogs) and most people teach their dogs to not kill livestock. regardless of where it happens to be.

Thanks for the confirmation re: high priced fighting birds...I'm amazed to say the least.

I can't be certain my dogs would go for this particular bird. Only, that I don't think they would be too discerning when it comes to plucking a chicken from the group. I should add, it has only come to my attention yesterday that my dogs were seen chasing one of my neighbour's chickens. The two of them (dogs) were caged last night and again today after a brief period to exercise and relieve themselves. This is not the answer however, they are well over two years old and have always been free to run. I'll just have to work something out with my neighbours regarding this issue. On that note, if anyone has any useful ideas on how to teach a mature dog not to chase / kill chickens I would be very interested in your suggestions.

How did you do that SBK?

macb or nienke would be good people to ask

I'll pm them and thank you for the reference.

I got my dogs as puppies, they grew up with free ranging chickens and learned early on that to go for a chicken was serious trouble.

Besides, puppies who grow up around full grown hens and roosters tend to learn a healthy respect for these creatures.

I have a Thai mate who is right into cockfighting, but myself know little about it in Thailand. I did spend a great deal of time in the Philippines however during the 70's.

I was a regular attendee at cockfights in these days. Even owned one, albeit very briefly, down in Cebu at one stage.

When it comes to gambling, like horseracing, yes, even chooks have 'pedigrees' and 'thoroughbreds' etc. Some birds were imported from Mexico and were worth very large sums of money, others were hacks you could buy from breeders at the local markets for as little as a few hundred pesos.

there are a ton of thai language magazines on fighting cocks, with pics and prices...

most normal grown dogs wont pick on a fighting cock, their spurs are nasty ; i got bashed by our non fighting cock and ended up as soup - many a year ago.

thai dogs dont seem to go for chickens. while in anon's house we /they ahd adopted a pup. the instant she even tried to run after one of MIL's hens, she got yelled at, corporally punished by MIL and everyone kept an eye on her after that so that she couldnt even look in the direction of a chicken without getting 'the picture'

The Bil’s most loved prize fighting cock is reported to be worth close to 20k. The bird gets pampered like a spoilt child but kept in a cage most of the time apart from the times when he lets it have some fighting practice.

I still can’t figure out why he frowns at me when I call it Tom Yum Kai. :)
