Hello friends,

Any idea where I can buy exercise equipment in Chiang Mai? I've looked at some shopping malls, but their selection was underwhelming. I want to buy a treadmill (or other home cardio equipment), an olympic bench with bar bells, leg machine, floor mat, and dumb bells.

Cheers, CMX

There are many posts on this topic already try to search, but for your interest I saw a treadmill advertised 2nd hand in classifieds a few days ago. I bought equipment for my resort fitness room at the 2nd floor Central KSG and they can order from catalogs if you want. I bought hand weights but had a rack made by a guy near Carrefour Superhighway who makes metal playground toys and it was very cheap

Has anyone tried that vibrating exercise platform thingy? Looks weird, but im curious. Is it just a gimick? Im a jogger/runner, so im a bit doubtful that it can do anything useful, but i read once somewhere that Madonna has one..so um..seeing as she is super fit I thought maybe it IS useful..? I guess i could google it, but i saw this thread, so decided to tag for some personal viewpoints. So..any personal viewpoints? :)

I am interested in vibrating exercise machine too. Read in a reputable magazine that the effect is stronger than normal workouts. Hard to believe, never took these toys serious but will explore more

If you believe the Mayo clinic than the effect is limited=

Question

Whole body vibration training: An effective workout?

I've seen a few ads for whole body vibration machines that supposedly exercise your muscles while you just stand there. Is this a good way to lose weight and improve fitness?

Answer

from Edward R. Laskowski, M.D.

For most healthy adults, whole body vibration isn't likely to result in measurable weight loss or fitness gains.

With whole body vibration training, you stand or sit on a vibrating platform. As the platform vibrates, your muscles are forced to react to the vibration. This may help you burn a few extra calories, but it isn't as effective as physical activity that you initiate and maintain yourself — such as walking or swimming. Whole body vibration training may even be harmful for people who have certain medical conditions, such as low back pain.

Still, whole body vibration training may have a place in some fitness routines. In recent studies, whole body vibration training:

Boosted bone mineral density in postmenopausal women

Improved muscle strength in elderly adults and women who have knee osteoarthritis

Improved balance in elderly women

If you want to lose weight and improve fitness, don't look for shortcuts. Enjoy a healthy diet and include physical activity in your daily routine. If you choose to try whole body vibration training, remember to do other aerobic and strength training activities as well.

May well be that Madona who moves on stage alone enough to make anyone lose weight got this machine as a little present.

Marketing works wonders

I read something along those lines a while back too. Something about the vibrations giving resistance training and toning muscles. Im a tad cynical, but certainly curious.

An article from 2006 about not believing the hype: http://blogcritics.org/scitech/article/the...adonna-and-the/

But, some positive customer feedback reviews here: http://sports.ciao.co.uk/Reviews/Crazy_Fit...achine__6860017

Couple of balanced reviews: http://www.thefatburner.net/articles/power-plate.html / http://www.dietspotlight.com/powerplate-review/

Seems like it may be a good machine for toning, if you use it along with normal toning positions such as squats etc. But, it wont give you any kind of cardio workout.

Often see them in the promotional displays on the mall display floor. Still havent been brave enough to step on one in public... maybe next time. :)

They have a vibrating exercise machine at the Spa in Mae Rim that often advertises on Thai Visa in the Chiang Mai section. I was not impressed by it, but just one use will not tell one a lot.
