Quake jolts in Indonesia does not affect Thailand

BANGKOK: -- An earthquake which rocked Indonesia's Sulawesi Island Saturday morning did not have any impact on Thailand, the Meteorological Department has announced.

Chalermchai Ek-karntrong, the Acting Director General of the Meteorological Department, said after receiving reports on the quake, the department checked with the tsunami warning center in Hawaii and was told that it would have no impact on Thailand, as the tremor was about 3,000 kilometers away from Bangkok.

The earthquake, measured at 6.9 on the Richter scale, rocked the Sulawesi Island at 8:04 a.m. (Thailand's time), with its epicenter located at 224 kilometers south of Kendari, the capital of the Sulawesi Province. It caused the sea tide to rise between three and four meters.

The quake sparked panic and fears of a tsunami in Indonesia, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

"After receiving the confirmed information, the Meteorological Department decided not to issue any warning to the public, as it may spark fears of another tsunami among Thais", he said.

The department would issue a warning to the public if the tremor had any effects on Thailand, he added.

I am presently in Indonesia, in a coastal city not far from where the quake was. No tidal waves here, and it's been about 7 hours since.
