A bizarre case now from Pattaya Beach, directly in front of Pattaya Police Station. In the early hours of Sunday Morning Police were alerted to a foreign man who had ran into the sea in an apparent attempt to avoid paying a bar bill. Officers arrived and spotted the man in the sea and after 30 minutes of negotiation, the man, later named as Mr. Gary William Donovan aged 41 from England, was escorted to Pattaya Police Station where a representative from the Cloud Nine Bar located in nearby Soi 8 presented an unpaid bar bill totaling 1,155 Baht. Mr. Donovan explained that he was waiting for some money to come from UK and could not currently pay the bill. He also revealed that domestic issues with his Thai Wife and Wife back in UK were stressing him out and for this reason he decided to go out on Saturday Night even though he knew he had no money. We understand that Mr. Donovan is now being held at the Pattaya Remand Prison as an investigation into the man has revealed further issues that require investigation.

Talk about lame excuses...apparently he doesn't have any friends to mooch off of. I wonder what the other issues are that need investigation.

Well, with a Thai wife AND one back home, bigamy springs to mind as one of the issues :)

A check on his mental wellbeing might be in order too lol!!!!

Probably got kids and did a runner to Thailand to avoid paying towards their up keep, now has a Thai wife and probably end up being deported with money that he will borrow from someone who will never get it back, what a looser...

Yep, and more likely than not the thai wife was the straw that broke the camels back...and probably worked out much more expensive in the short-term than both wife and kids at home. :)

you lot and yes all of you are so full of compassion its sad, as a new member of this forum i have watched and read and come to the conclusion that most of you have nothing better to do than slag anyone who falls out of line, yeah ok the guy did wrong and should be punished but give me a break, we are talking about 1500 baht, would you rather he had just commited suicide than go out for a drink with no money.

i think he was attempting suicide as opposed to not wanting to pay the bill, ,but you must admit a lot of men completly lose the plot in thailand,, so yes, as you say sad,.......but self inflicted,

Understand your point, the problem is this reflects badly on all us farangs, especially Brits, and I think that is where the venom comes from. This will be all over the Thai press and net, and for that I have no sympathy whatsoever for this loser.

Welcome tibap - but I am not sure we need you to become another member of the bleeding hearts club !

Suicide ? just a trite comment that is irrelevant to this situation, I may as well say that in the Middle East he would have his hands cut off.

The guy went out without the means to pay for goods that he knew he was going to consume. In his country, under the Theft Act 1968, such an activity is indeed ....... theft. I agree entirely that it is not a hanging offence. We can probably assume that this is the thin end of the wedge as far as HIS problems are concerned. HE needs to sort them out, taking whatever support/advice is available - he may find a greater degree of sympathy in his home country.

You mean almost an entire nation of excuse-making bleeding hearts that will pardon just about anything.

Adults deal in actions and consequences.

My advice is that he grow up before travelling abroad.

I agree and with the likelihood that the unpaid bill will be taken out of the staff's wages, it was an incredibly selfish act as well by stealing from people on such a low salary that it may well be a week's wages for them.

I agree with the previous poster that it reflects badly on all of us. Many more selfish thieves like this and the Thais will switch to the UK system of paying for every drink as it comes as they won't trust foreigner's not to run out on the bill

"going out for a drink with no money" either involves stealing from someone OR bludging off your mates.

If you owned a bar would you be happy to accomodate for some poor bugger that walked in off the street and was unable to pay you..and then hence, you pay for the beers AND your staffs wages??

Ive been broke many a time...and i stayed home and read a book.
