I went to apply for a visa extension(his orginal visa was for 30days) for my 14old son at Hua Hin immmigration office.

To my surprise we could only apply for 7days and then after had to leave the country with him through an airport to get another 30days!

i need him to stay an extra 4weeks as he is spending his school holidays with me. so now i have to accept that when he goes back to the US on 16th august we will have to pay the overstay fee 500baht per day for almost 4 weeks.

Can anyone advise? his visa is epxiring on 19th july. (We are preapring to travel to koh samui today for a week...) then back to hua hin.

thanks

He does not have a visa but only a 30 day visa exempt stamp and that can only be extended 7 days and normally requires a ticket out. He can cross any border and return for 15 days and do again to make the 30 days. Or make an air return to obtain 30 days. A cheap air trip to KL or Singapore might be an option and avoid overstay payment/stamp in passport.

Children do not get charged overstay. However I am not sure what the age limit is. Maybe it is 14.

As Lopburi said on a Visa Exempt entry you will only get 7 days extension.

Actually he was lucky that they let him on the flight without a Visa and without a flight ticket leaving within 30 days.

Why not take your son on a leisurely train trip to Penang and get him a tourist visa? They (visas not trains!) are still free and problem solved.

Thank you for all your replies, appreciated,

I have kept him in the country and will be unfortunately have to pay the overstay fee...i was planning to leave the country for few days.

But we could not as my second son who is 7yr was sick.

Hope fully it iwll not be a problem for my 14yr old to return here.

Thanks

No problem returning with an overstay, so don't worry about that. We see people returning with an overstay of more than 1 year.

You might even be lucky, as we don't know the age from which they will start charging an overstay.
