swine flu in Thai?

swine flu in Thai?

In Thailand this strain of flu is being called officially, "โรคไข้หวัดใหญ่สายพันธุ์ใหม่ 2009 (rohkF khaiF watL yaiL saayR phanM maiL 2009) or "the 2009 new flu (epidemic disease))" or, more scientifically, "โรคไข้หวัดใหญ่สายพันธุ์ใหม่ชนิดเอ เอช1 เอ็น1" (rohkF khaiF watL yaiL saayR phanM maiL N1H1) or "the new H1N1 flue". Sometimes this disease is shortened to "เชื้อไข้หวัดใหญ่สายพันธุ์ใหม่ฯ" (cheuuaH khaiF watL yaiL saayR phan[t]M maiL) "the new flu epidemic virus". This latter term refers to the virus per se.

Notice that in Thai, the swine has been let off the hook.

For the sake of completeness, the naming of this disease has some history in the Thai press.

In early April, it was being referred to as "ไข้หวัดหมู" (literally, 'swine flu').

The Thai Ministry of Health then decided that this terminology might put people off consuming pork. On instructions, the name was changed to "ไข้หวัดใหญ่เม็กซิโก" (literally 'Mexican flu').

This was later changed again to the terms given above by David.

Most people I talk to seem to be calling it

ไข้หวัดสองพันเก้า (kai wat song pan gaew) 'flu 2009'

for short.

I have also heard (kai wat song soon soon gaew) on talk radio.

And for preventative measure one may want to wear one of these:

หน้ากากปิดปากจมูก

Especially in crowded places like bars.
