I asked the embassy this question and they referred me to Thai immigration. I am about to apply for an extension of stay on an O-A multiple entry visa. I live in Nong Khai and the closest American embassy is in Ventienne. Can I get my letter of verification of income based on retirement from the embassy there or must it be from an embassy in Thailand? Also I have exited the country once and my o-a visa was extended for one year from that date which at the time gave me a year and 1/2 on that visa. On a multiple-entry can I leave again and get another extension or must I apply for an extension of stay? My current visa expires on Aug 28 2009.

Thanks for any help.

You must get it from the US embassy in Thailand.

Check if it is your visa that expires or your permission to stay. With a multiple O-A you can just leave and re-enter the country as long as your VISA is valid, and you will get permission to stay for 1 year. After your visa is expired you will need a re-entry permit to keep your permission to stay alive. Without it you will need to get a new visa if you leave the country.

So if it is indeed your visa that will expire on Aug. 28 you just leave and re-enter before that date and your good for another year.

The visa is what you got at theambassy or consulate, the permission to stay at the Thai border.

I'm a little confused about visa expiry and extension to stay expiry. My visa which I got in Houston has no expiration date just a use before date. It is o-A and multiple entry. I left Thailand once and received a stamp "admitted until 28 August 2009. When they transferred my visa onto my new passport it was all in Thai except again "admitted until 28 August 2009. Is this my visa expiration date or an extension of stay date? I have never applied for an extension of stay. So could I leave again and get another year without getting an extension of stay?

Thanks for your prompt help.

The use before date on the visa is the expiry date of the visa.

28th of august is the expiry date of your permission to stay, I think your visa expired some time ago already. You will indeed need to get the income letter from the embassy and extend your stay with that letter at immigration.

Do not leave Thailand witjout a re-entry permit, it would eman you would need to get a new visa.

Thanks Mario. That is very clear. Yes my use before date is Feb 06, 2009. So it is off to Chiang Mai to the embassy there.
