Why do Americans hate football? I played for 5 years before High School and loved it. Once I got to high school I would be called names for playing and always picked on for playing a "woman's sport." I understand why most Americans want to see action and as we all know football has very little action. Unless you count the beauty of missed shots. "Wow! did you see that? He almost made it" so what!!!! He wasn't even close. I understand that football is the #1 sport in the world because anyone can play. You just run down the field in the direction of the ball. Did you know that more than 300 players played in the last two years without even touching the ball. There are no plays, no reason to even have a coach(What the heck does he do anyway,) well besides sober up. We even have a drinking game at our bar... When Christiana Ronaldo falls and starts to cry everyone has to drink. Please tell me one more thing. Why is it that when a team scores they all skip, Kiss, touch each others bums, take their clothes off, lick man sweatlick caress each other and get on their knees for a super sexy slide. Are all the players in the closset if so why not come out and be proud of who you are fans are. If you agree with this please let me know if not go back to listening to your PET SHOP BOYS.

I guess it depends on where you are in the US. At my high school in Maine, football (soccer) was one of the most popular sports. (probably tied first with baseball and basketball)

Have you ever been to a baseball game? And you telling me "Americans want to see action"?

Why is it that when a team scores they all skip, Kiss, touch each others bums, take their clothes off, lick man sweatlick caress each other and get on their knees for a super sexy slide.

Have you ever watched any sports? American Football, Hockey, Baseball at celibate goals, touch downs, homeruns etc... in this manner

Dave, pay no attention to the OP. Football or soccer as we prefer to call it is certainly not hated by all Americans. While it will not compete viably with American football, baseball or basketball for some time that is only due to the fact that the sports I just mentioned have been well established for over a century in the US and are now ingrained in our culture.

Soccer has been gaining more and more popularity in the US in recent years and I believe it will continue to do so in the future. The OP's post appears to me to be an obvious troll intended to simply stir up controversy. Ignore him.

The simple truth is that more children play fotball(soccer) because it takes very little skill. Also with basketball, baseball, hockey, tennis, bowling, badmitten, golf, Amer.football etc. if a mistake is made it's made by one person. With soccer it's a random game of running back and forth with no finger pointing fon mistakes. You can completely stink but it doesn't matter because there are no plays or skill involved. This is why the outcasts usually pick this sport for fear of humilitation. Basically everyone is a loser so nobody is to blame. Everyone says soccer will be big in America, what a joke. America wants hero and domination, not games ending in ties or 1-0

Who cares. Americans want their teams to look like gladiators not pretty boarderline ladyboys. NEED I SAY MORE??????

I can predict the outcome of next years world cup......

BORING ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz

Except when Christian Ranoldo takes his shirt off and rolls on the ground.

What a great male role model. I hope my little girl turns out just like him.

I'm an American male, straight, and I like football (I prefer to use that old Oxford term "soccer"). It's grown on me over the past 15 years living abroad. As for the action, yeah, 95% of the time it is pretty lacking. But like a baseball game, start watching toward the very end and it can be interesting. Or often when I'm enjoying a game, someone flops on the ground crying (apparently illegal by FIFA rules?) and it ruins the game for me. I tried cheering (quietly) against England last World Cup (when surrounded by obnoxious stag groups one can't help but want to see them suffer). Unfortunately, they played several teams from southern countries whose players would flop and I quickly switched to the England side. At least the northern Euro countries aren't cry babies. Don't soccer players and rugby players wear basically the same kit? Shorts and a shirt? You never see a rugby player squirming on the ground crying.

Soccer has been the most popular youth sport in the US for at least 20 years. The reason the pro leagues aren't popular is because there isn't any money in it. My nephew could have gotten a scholarship if he wanted to play after high school but he didn't. When pro players in the US can earn obscene amounts as in other sports it will take off. But until then, we'll have to watch as the USA team slowly makes it's way among the elites. Few serious footie fans would disagree that there might be only 5 countries in the world who have a chance to win a World Cup before the USA does (Italy, Brazil, Germany, ?, ?). So, Americans, like it or not, you'll be world champs before 185 other countries.

Closer to the truth is that it is safer for the kids, easier to learn, cost of equipment is minimal (all you need are shorts & t-shirt, shoes, a field, ball, and a couple nets) and boys and girls can both play.

Exactly.

But after an appeal by a member. I'm willing to open the thread again. But please don't get into American/gay etc etc bashing.

because yer crap at it

i think that the USA womens team has proven you wrong and the mens team is now defeating many of the same teams the euro teams are unable to beat.

Please don't.

That was my reaction also. Common conundrum on internet boards: When someone is so idiotically contentious with such shoddy material, are they trolling or are they a legitimate jack*ass who actually believes what they're spouting? Then there's always the chance that they're a mole, taking on the identity of the ostensible group they pretend to represent, trying to make them look bad. Being American, I'm going to choose to believe that he's the latter, somebody who's just trying to make Americans look asinine, pretty superfluous given our talented roster in that sport. But on principle, I've directed my post toward you, since I try to avoid directly feeding this type of "person".

J-star your request / directive is noted*

*caveat.

"American's hatred of football (soccer) is a colonial thing."

Way back when, around the time of a tea party I gather, some lads thought it would be a good idea to kick around a few watermelons while the ships were burning.

Seeing this obviously as a slap in face - from then on out a hatred towards football (soccer) was born.

Perhaps my take on historical Yank events isn't that accurate, but sounds plausible.

Ironic. One thread that really did deserve to be closed, gets opened again!

The whole premise of the OP was to bash - and it wasn't even intelligent or articulate bashing.

Rix, wouldn't worry about it too much, from what I noticed, it took him about an hour and half to write / re-write that insight. Either that or he went for lunch in between sentences.

In the 2006 World Cup, eventual champions Italy won 6, lost 0 and tied 1. Their one tie? Against the USA.

Also, just last month in the Confederation Cup, the USA ended Spain's record-tying 15 game winning streak by a score of 2-0.

I'm English and I hate football. Bunch of pansy primadonnas. Put 'em in a rugby shirt for 80 minutes and see how roughie toughie they think football is after that.

a good stir by the OP, but not worth taking the bite.

But I will.

The nice thing about people like the OP, by default, they make us all look more intelligent.

Their new found Confederations Cup success has really caused an uproar in high schools and universities throughout the heartland. Is it ok to come out of the shower? Can I tell people I long to play soccer instead of American Football?

Personally I blame it all on David and Posh, the Glaziers, Gillettes and so on. Now we got ESPN getting in on the act. What's next, Monday afternoon soccer?
