Well that rules you out then, Jack!

I've yet to see you make one constructive post to this thread, just an endless stream of cheap jibes at those posters trying to input something useful.

It;s anyone who doesn't agree with him. It must be difficult to live a life when he is so sagacious and surrounded by what he deems as fools.

2 user names - certainly not. I reserved that for serpico aka PTG.

On the other hand, buffoon.....................hmm :)

Seems that you have a fairly high opinion of yourself, sir? I've noticed that most of your posts are normally insults or questioning peoples intelligence.

jacksaprat - now that is intelligent.

The most glorious news that appeared right at the bottom of The Nation's article was:-

"Meanwhile, King Power is suffering a decline in sales volume, due to the domestic political turbulence and type-A (H1N1) influenza. This year's sales are down 30-40 per cent so far."

Hopefully, by the end of this year, KP will be teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. I, for one, will be pleased to see them go, maybe then we could have some real competition at Swampy, instead of the corrupt monopoly that we have at present.

P.S. I thought "Jacksaprat" was spot on! I hope we all refer to him as that from now on! :)

There was a long and detailed post in the Airport section of the forum warning of the 'Excise Scam' but it was unfortunately spoiled by the usual suspects and closed by the mods.

A shame, as it served as a good warning of what was really going on at the airport, even if some members are still in complete denial.

If anyone has a link to it or any other it would be appreciated as I can't seem to find it.

So many scams, but as usual the Saffron Tinted Specs Brigade will always defend it. I am sure the great Emperor Tud has been fully vindicate in his warnings.

I have no doubt that when the history of Thai Visa is written, Mr Toad and Emperor Tud (and the good Oberkommando, plus PadThaiGuy - aka Serpico) will be right up there in the highlights :)

Intelligent, thinking people will struggle to believe it is possible. :D

There have been several useful comments on this thread, along with the multitude of other threads dealing with this subject.

Unfortunately, they have been overwhelmed by the less than useful, and more so, the unthinking.

I am smitten by your reference to my intelligence :D

I was still under the assumption that they had their privilege to operate at Swampy taken away, but I guess that was never going to really happen.

I think the main issue here, is have they or, have they not been aware of these scams in the past, and what have they done about it? All I see from them at the moment, is them trying to shift blame in a very unprofessional manner.

As for their reduction in sales, that's not been helped by airport closures, global economy and of course decreasing tourist numbers. This latest story, is hardly going to encourage people to shop there, and for several Embassies to issue warnings, something is not right.

As one poster laments, the only piece of information needed is the exact time of the "crackdown", so that the status quo can resume, unimpeded:

"Great, only one thing, you forgot to tell what time the crack down would take place on the 28th of July."

Sohpon acts to prevent airport scams

Writer: BangkokPost.comPublished: 22/07/2009 at 05:09 PM

Transport Minister Sohpon Zarun on Wednesday ordered Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to step up measures at Suvarnabhumi and other airports to prevent extortion scams.

Mr Sohpon gave the order during his inspection trip to Suvarnabhumi airport after a British couple clamed they were the victims of an extortion scam after being accused of shoplifting from a duty free shop. The couple's claim was reported by the BBC.

The transport minister was also said to have been criticised by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for failing to keep the airport to international standards.

Mr Sohpon said he had ordered the AoT to arrange its officials to take care of foreign tourists in case they are engaged in a legal dispute and required to be handed over to police investigators. During this process, the tourists must be escorted by airport officials and embassies of their countries must be informed. This is to prevent members of the scam gangs intervening and offering help.

He said all embassies will be informed that if their citizens encounter this problem they should file a complaint with the Transport Ministry immediately.

The minister said the British couple's claim will also be investigated and legal action will be taken against those found to have been involved in the scam.

Are you retarded or something ? Stealing something from the shop is a small petty almost irrelevant crime, kidnapping and holding someone for ransom is a very serious crime.

Yes, but not only retarded. An apoligist or one who hasn't the slightest clue about Thailand and the fact circumstances of present developments which of course are permanent and ongoing developments, this time called to account by virtually all of us and exposed BIG TIME.

Kudos to the couple from the UK and among others to the Danish Embassy (which has little at stake in Thailand economically or financially so is free to lead in speaking out).

The poster's English isn't much better than either that of the nefarious Thai Policie or their gangster operative agents regardless of from which Old Word, 3rd World country they originate to systematically and systemically work unrelentingly and brazenly to rip off farang.

This is the time of strong language and of poweful actions by farang against the decrepit and wretched scammers of Thailand, most of whom are in the government and wear uniforms of one kind or another.

That we have a forum at which we can and must strive towards better circumstances and situations in respect to farang in Thailand is appreciated and commendable.

At the Yellow shirts riots at Gov House, they were calling for the expulsion of foreigners. They want us out!

The Thai Police have declared open season on foreigners ever since the coup.

Is this just hyperbole or are you being serious ? Did they give any reasons ?

Two shoplifters get hassled, big deal. 40 million people go thru that airport a year!

If you had read the material available you would already know that there are a lot more than two people held to ransom. The 'translator' already admitted to 'helping' about 150 people.

Now in the biggest newspaper in Norway too

http://www.aftenposten.no/reise/nyheter/article3178683.ece

The first line down in the article says: Bangkok has a bad reputation for attempted fraud againts tourists.

I wish you good luck Thailand

Ahoi ahoi.. you are a sinking ship and down you will go.

Why? Do people flock to Thailand to see Norwegian tourists? Why this influx of people with absolutely no street-smarts about them coming here in the last few years? There was a time when you would most likely meet someone on a bit of an adventure in Asia. Now, they are just looking for a cheap time with poor locals to serve them.

Indeed, although in this case he was 'helping' to relieve them of approximately $11,000, as for the other 149 cases I have no idea how much he helped them.

Even thou you can question if the authorities will deal with this "problem" I´m quite amazed that the news has spread so fast and a lot of the media sheds some light on it. Thank God for the internet :D

Exactly. If and when the Thais wake-up and realise the power and the scope of the internet they may begin to consider their actions and policies a lot more thoroughly - what would the negative/positive effect be on our actions? Naaaaaaaaaarrrr :):D:D

A very good point. When I first came back in the early 1990s life in Thailand was an adventure. No really swanky shopping malls except for the world trade center, interstate travel was done by bus or train and we would stay on the beach in bamboo huts with no electricity for most of the day for 50bt a day. People who lived like this were on the road and were used to dealing with the ups and downs of differing cultures - I was living in Tokyo at the time having served 9 years in the Royal Navy (an extreme culture in itself).

Nowadays, we have the sky train, the underground, fast food outlets everywhere (most of the big hitters are here, now). For bejasus's sake, there is even a 'Boots the chemist' on Khao San Road! :D The adventurous armed with their street smarts have moved on a long time ago or have settled down to make a good life out here. Those that come have been hoodwinked by the modern facade of Thailand into thinking its run along the lines of a modern first world democracy :) They couldn't be much further from the truth. Yes, the material goods are in place but the culture is still very much 'dog eat dog' (talk to the Thais - they will verify this) and 'buyer beware'. Thailand has long been on the 'danger' lists of embassies around the world but few take this seriously. Consequently, the 'fresh off the boat' are being fleeced or worse at an even more alarming rate as they fall for the most obvious scams :D

Wake up people - this is not 21st century suburbia its 'jungle law' out here. Rule number one: There is always a victim. Rule number two: Don't be it! :D

The 'street smarts' needed in Oslo are much less stringent than thos needed in Bangkok.

Actually most Norwegians come over in winter time to get some Sun, since there is

almost none at home and they start getting depression badly.

Same with the majority of Scandnavians.

Escaping the cold and dark.

The old ginger leader of King Power paid mega Baht years ago to be allowed exclusive access to Thailand's important international airports. King Power is kicking it old school in a country that files multiple law suits even more than the United States. The old adage, "better to seek forgiveness than ask permission", seems to be part of King Powers corporate motto. They commandeered twice as much space than was allowed when Suvarnabhumi opened and even built onto their airport mall when they needed another large restaurant.

Now we have official "unofficial" representatives at the airport to facilitate taking money from foreigners without due process. Non-police transporting passengers to a fleabag hotel acting as their jail facility and holding them for days at a time is nothing less than kidnapping. Driving around with the passengers under threat and telling them to take what they can out of ATM's is nothing short of robbery.

These crimes would be punishable by 10 years in prison in a developed country. For everyone involved who didn't implicate their co-conspirators it could be even longer. I cannot imagine sitting around in a staff meeting at King Power Duty Free and tosing this around. Is King Power so powerful that they can participate in this scam and getaway with it?

Theft is handled all over Thailand, guided by the law and procedures set forth in the criminal code. King Power's total defense is that they got a tape. I've watched the tape and it does not justify the kidnapping and robbery of potential theft suspect. King Power Duty Free is clearly involved in a criminal gang and perpetuating a continuing criminal enterprise right under the noses or with the blessing of the AOT and whatever government is in power this year.

Like I said earlier, at the end of the day absolutely nothing will come of this. There will be the usual photo op for the media the high ranking cops and a few pollies will want their ugly mugs in the press and on telly.

The propaganda will read that the problem has been solved and all of the sycophants will nod their heads the populus will applaud a job well done saying see how wonderfully Thais "take care foreigner".

And when the dust settles in a couple of weeks (cause they know the masses are stupid with short memories) it will be all business as usual at the airport with the scaming and harrassing and threatening of western travellers continuing unabated.
