Hello Group,

I am newcomer in Bang Chan(Rayong). I would apply for DSL provider. Witch provider can supply 6Mbit/s or faster in this region.

Should I have a special land line phone connection first?

Actually I don't need a fixline number, I have only IP numbers and handy phones.

Thank you.

I don't think 6mb is possible in Rayong, Ban Chang. TOT offers 4mb in certain areas and Maxnet advertises 4mb also. But remember this is the speed in Thailand not internationally. No one on a normal consumer line gets the advertised speed out of Thailand.

I just got a TOT line in Phala Beach and the TOT people said 2mb only in my area. Lines works OK

Look for the TT&T Maxnet service.

As you probably can see from some threads here their service is not good at the moment, but most likely one of their "engineers" will stumble on a solution one of the days/weeks...

It used to be rock solid for months on end!

If you need any reliability, and especially no throttling/blocking of certain protocols (including VOIP), then you'll have to go for the Premier package, cost 5200 Baht/month +vat...

And you better live very close to a telephone exchange / micro Dslam, as 6 mbit/s over Thai phone lines won't work properly over any distance...

Thanks for your answer's.

I am wondering why the speed is different between local and internationally. :-( Thailand is not an island. :-)

I'll see what I can get there, but 5200B is a lot for internet connection.

Here in Berlin the speed is depend on the cable to the next terminal. So I get average 11-12mb. But I have a package with limited 6mb. It cost 25 euro.

I saw that the fritzBox is available in Thailand, so I hope I can use my wifi router 7270 there. It have a include dsl modem.

Some one experience on that kind of router?

Thailand is still a 3rd world country when it comes to the infrastructure and especially in terms of the services provided like DSL. I think a lot of what they do in this area is dependent on the market they have to sell the service to. Most Thais cannot afford to spend money on an internet connection but they can buy a mobile phone and a motorbike. The companies that make this stuff direct their money making at this segment of the market. The government concentrates on providing essential service. Water and electric. After that companies like TOT which is government controlled provide services to the masses not the small farang population.

The tax structure here is so weak that the government can't provide anything but the basics and it relies on big companies to offer what the consumer wants.

Countries like Germany have a rich population to get the funds to build the infrastructure. The people more or less demand this and are willing to pay for it in the form of taxes. The companies that build these services know that the people will buy the services so they the provider will have payback on the investment. In Thailand the basic people have no power and no money. The Thai elite hold all the power and money and allow the government and big business to give the people what they ( the elite) want them to have.

Maybe in 50 years Thailand will catch up to the rest of the world in terms of infrastructure. But I doubt it.

We should be thankful we have what we have here. My TOT 2mb line works fine here in Banchang. You say you have a 12mb connection? You will be happy with 1 or 2 here>>>>>>>if you can get a land line where you plan to live.

Not sure I entirely agree!

Actually their domestic internet infrastructure is brilliant! I have never seen my domestic speeds drop lower then the capacity of my actual line.

You are right saying that the companies focus on their main market which are Thai people. I reckon 80% of the sites visited by Thais are domestic, and they have massive speeds accessing those domestic sites at very low prices. They have their own local p2p servers, everything...

True has 8Mbps for between 1000 and 2000 Baht/month (depends if you have any of True's other services like mobile phone or sat tv).

TT&T launched a 10 Mbps service for 1490 Baht/month.

It's just when we are talking international connectivity. Thailand is unlucky in being globally bang on the other side of the place where 60% of the internet's content is hosted! Which for a start means that the actual price/investment for the physical lines is more expensive then anywhere else! Add to that low market demand. Almost 70 million Thais versus a couple of hundred thousand farangs makes it commercially very hard to invest in massive international connectivity.

IMO they did the right thing in keeping prices low for domestically fast services, and still offer service with better international speeds at a premium price.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why one needs a 6 or 8Mbps line.

VOIP works perfectly fine on my 3Mbps ADSL line, I can download over 1 GB/hour, so that's more then 30 regular movies a day, 6 HD movies (720p) or 3 full HD movies (1080p)

It would be fun yes, but I'm not losing any sleep over only having my paltry 3 Mbps (at 2200 something Baht/month)

I think we are on the same wave length. Maybe disagree on a small point or two. I don't claim to be any expert on this just voicing my opinion.

And as I said I am happy with my 2mb TOT DSL connection. My main point was that the OP should not expect what he has in his country as once you get into the hinterlands of LOS the connections get worse and worse as is testimony from some of the writers on this forum.

I read somewhere that Japan is 100 percent connected with reliable high speed services even in the back country areas. Don't know if this is accurate could have been hype from someplace.

Does your "international internet" connection slow down during the day? When you pay more for the international line do you usually get reliable high speed international internet? The reason I ask is I day trade stocks and will be moving to BKK in Sept. 3 Mbps is more than enough bandwidth for me.

Are all the people who complain about slow international internet on the cheap package?

Thank you,

Sean

If I can get 3-4 mb I am OK.

I don't download Movies and other big files. Maybe some videos from friends/ for friends.

I only wondering because of the speed difference between servers in Thailand and outside Thailand. I mean this from the technical point of view.

Normaly I think the speed is limited by the server independet where they stay.

During all my stays in Thailand until now I have always a good connection, even contry site via handy phone with my laptop.

So I am good hope to find a good connection there.

If you're happy with what you had before than in Banchang you will be happy as the lines are good enough here. Like I said at least 2 times now. I have a 2mb TOT line and it works good. I haveat least 2 other friends that have the 4mb line and they say they work good. One friend says his works as good as his conection in the US.

In you're original post you said 6mb's. ToT I think not but 4mb yes. Maxnet I don't know about
