We just received our retirement visa's (multiple entry O-A) The embassy said that we could exit and enter Thailand as many times as we wanted. We were reading on Thai Visa and this is what is stated:

5.1 Upon arrival, holder of this type of visa will be permitted to stay in Thailand for 1 year from the date of first entry. During the one-year period, if he or she wishes to leave and re-enter the country, he or she is required to apply at the Immigration office for re-entry permit (single or multiple) before departure. In the case of leaving the country without a re-entry permit, the permit to stay for 1 year shall be considered void.

Am I reading this wrong or do I have to apply for a re entry permit every time I leave.

We don't want to find after we have left that we have lost our retirement visa.

With a Multi Entry Non O-A Visa you will be given a 12 month stay each time you enter up until the Visa expiry date.

Do a border run a day or two before it expires and you will get another 12 months giving a total of 2 years.

In the second year you will need a Re Entry Permit if you want to leave the country.

I entered Thailand on a multiple entry O-A Last November, I just Did a border crossing at mai sai and upon returning I got a permission to stay stamp good until 22 July 2010. I am very happy that I listened to the folks on thai Visa for giving the right info on getting a O-A visa.

Actually that is very important to remember (re-entry permit) but it applies to returns after visa expiration - which may not be until November in this case.

This probably is a stupid question, but what happens after the second year?

Are you good to go again by doing a border crossing just before the second years extension expires, therefore getting a third year out of the same visa, or do you have to go further afield and re-apply for a fresh O-A?

The normal procedure is to extend you stay at Immigration using the required financial requirements currently in place.

You can return to home country and obtain a new OA visa, aand a few do this, but as an extension only costs 1,900 baht (plus financial paperwork) it is not cost effective unless you are earning a huge return on your home country account and afraid to lose that for the 3 months required in a Thai account.

Thanks for the swift answers, you 2 :)

Last question i promise (well, for now anyway). If i went for the pension or the combo method of proof of finiances, they wouldnt need any seasoning requirements in subesequent years?

It is really impossible to predict the future. But if you are asking if by doing the Pension this year could you change and do the bank deposit next year without the need to meet the current requirements for bank deposit I am sure the answer will be no.

Well, first you have to distinguish between the validity time for the visa, which is one year from the date of issue, and the validity of the permission to stay in Thailand. The first date is clearly written as "enter before ..." on the visa, which you got in your home country whereas the permission to stay date is the stamp with a date the immigration officer gives you at the border point.

Since you have a visa with a multiple-entry you can leave and return Thailand as many times you like during the validity time of the visa and each time you will be granted one year's permission to stay. Hence, you could maximize the time before you apply for an extention of stay by crossing the border the day before the expiry date of the visa.

Once the visa has expired you need the re-entry permit to be able to return to Thailand with the same status. Upon your return you will be granted the same time as if you had not left the country.
