Sometimes I can click on "view new posts" and get five pages worth, and if I come back a half hour later, I'll just get one page. But there are times when I come back and it appears I end up viewing the same five pages I viewed 30 minutes earlier. How does this work?

Sounds like the cookie from your last session wasn't properly stored. Are you on a standalone system, or logging in from a network?

I'm at home going through a broadband router and a cable modem. I block third party cookies but that shouldn't affect it--correct??

Happens to me, too. I just click on 'this week', which makes it 'normal' again, meaning, it's not really the whole 'this week'... :o
