Burger Joints Close

Nothing wrong with good old fashioned promotion as long as it is true. Unfortunately, I have not been brave enough or drunk enough to try a Mike's burger again. I will though.

Maybe Farangdanny can let us know what happened to Mike's in the Anusarn which is now closed.

I also think that Meals On Wheels could have a few more burger places listed.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the above member is advertising and has shares in the company?

Probably and good luck, try going under the radar next time omitting words like 'prime', though.

Regards Bojo

Also, by the way, Prime is a grade of beef. While you might be using 100% beef, I sincerely doubt it is Prime.

[it only means that most people don't know a good burger. Sure Mikes gets the tourist's who don't know better but their food is like typical American greasy junk food places.

If only they were that good! :)

You should try MIKE'S again. There have been some changes. The BIG 150gm. Burger is delicious. Nimmenheimen branch and Kad Suan Kaew have been taken over by the Franchisee. Nimmenheimen has been completly refurbished with air con room upstairs. They are clean, efficient and well run now.

Has this change come about since May 2009?

This was the last time I ate at Nimmanhamein branch when I found the food pretty average and the service rude.

Uncle Sams... Joe Jets... Mikes ( Closed and was Uncle Sams and now Mikes again ).

Bottom line is that location is important for a Burger Joint... no matter how good it may be.

The other disturbing fact is that there is not a single place in Chiang Mai that serves a good hamburger. The Duke's is inconsistent at best... not good the last time in.

Mikes... well... the hamburger is not hamburger ( 100% beef )... they buy from a local place and they mix lower standard beef ( more than 30% fat ) with other ingredients... which does not make for a good Burger.

The only one I can stomach lately in Chiang Mai is a Whopper from Burger King.

A lot of people claim that the Burger King Burger is the best in Thailand, but, to me, the beef tastes exactly the same as McDonalds and (if you buy a set dinner) Whoppers are almost twice the price of a Big Mac.

I don't think Burger King is the best, but they have a good consistency. You can order a Burger King anytime, anywhere and always be assured of a great Burger. How can you compare to McDonalds? Their meat is quite dry and thin, and doesn't compare in any way in my opinion. :)

I always found the buns at McDonalds to be quite dry as well, like it was one or two days old. Burger King is definitely better despite the lame advertising they run here featuring Chiang Mai.

"They don't even have a word for burger"

"Yes they do..... IT'S BURGER" I'd yell at the TV (I know it's silly, but I'm allergic to bulls*it)

I love Burger King in the U.S. as they use a higher quality beef than other fast food outlets, but the beef in Thailand tastes exactly the same as McDonald's to me and it is very low quality.

I have never noticed dry buns in either place.

Ajarn, which burgers do you recommend over Burger King?

Have to correct someone again. Mike's Burgers are not made locally. They are made by American specialist burger company in Bangkok. The last process they go through is a comprehensive bacteriological test. They are 100% prime beef (guaranteed), with 20% fat, which is nesessary. A burger without fat would be hard, dry and not too tasty.

Reminds me of all the Marco threads. Prime beef (guaranteed) you'd better ask for your money back. At 700 Baht a kilo or more for off cuts of prime beef you would be paying your customers to eat your burger. Suffice to say quality beef, which is what I think you and perhaps they are referring to when you say Prime. I'll try one, heck, I went to Marcos.

Your self control in not mentioning 'the above' is noted.

Actually it was your praise (understatement) for the place that has got me there 4 times in as many weeks.

I'll have to try a burger now, are you consistent in your recommendations? Can I mention your name?

If it's not up to scratch, what's the word for 'refund' in Thai?!

Gatorhead, are you truly giving the new Mike's "Prime Beef" Burger the Gatorhead333 seal of approval, or are you just joshing around? :)

UG,

I need to clarify a few points as far as Mikes burgers and all other food places go.

I like Mikes, it is an American hamburger and not dry out cardboard like meat as so many places here in CM serve with a smile..but much more important...>>>>

At Mikes I can see what they are cooking! No games with food preparation at this joint! Anytime one can actually view the preparation and cooking of the food they are about to consume..... this for me raises the bar of the restaurant considerable and makes eating a pleasure!

Especially in CM. since we know hygiene is only a word maybe not a practice in some of these places slamming out product in mass quanities.

[/fontMy upbringing , education in the sciences and just basic common sense has made me very wary of the threat to my well being from a possible filthy kitchen in CM and for that matter anywhere in the world !

O.K. when you go to your favorite restaurants if you can not see what is going on maybe sneak on back and take a gander.Do they have screen doors and windows keeping out the vermin, does the Thai help use plastic gloves as they fondle your food, do you see cockroaches wander around or even worst ?

Questions like these always go thru my mind when snacky- wackying on food that could possibly poison me and even kill me if handled / prepared improperly!. I have heard many people getting sick at some of these popular restaurants and I know for sure I do not want to be another casualty of eating out!

these fun facts have a huge bearing on which eateries i eat at!!!!Mikes you can see them cook and it is cleaner than most!

Enjoy!!

I have to agree. If you show the customers what you are doing, then you have to be clean and wear hygiene gloves etc. Mike's beefburgers even go through a bacterilogical test before and after they are frozen.

A common misconception is that gloves are hygienic. The actual fact is that gloves become the contaminating agent. Gloves covering the hand do not allow the food preparer to realize that their gloves are dirty and they touch everything that they would be touching with their hands with the gloves. There is no substitution for washing hands and handling food with clean hands.

Persoanlly I think gloves is more unhygenic as hands tend to sweat inside. Customers are under the impression that wearing gloves are better than not. However I've watched Subway staff and they dispose of the pair once used and take a new pair for the next sandwich. That's got to be the best in the eyes of the public.

However at my place I train staff to wash hands inbetween and in Samui ones hands really do sweat in the gloves.

wow plastic gloves are no good!! now i have heard it all...!! have you ever seen a kitchen worker with a finger up their nose with a plastic glove on?? I haven't ..

!!! i guess we need to tell all the doctors around the world have them throw them away ... just wash their hands and then do surgery. this is getting silly. yeh like subway, first you must train your people and pay them enough to get workers that care!!yes this is extra work and maybe hard but doing this helps make employees really understand how to be clean. we know nobody is washing their hands between each order but if given the plastic glove box the can easily be clean. hense plastic gloves at subway and at Mikes burger

lets make this simple, like your underwear you need to change the plastic gloves!!!!

Plastic gloves... Good !! Nobody is changing this one on the medical community or on the general public at large. once you have staff trained properly things like changing plastic gloves should fall in place. first you have to have a owner that buys the plastic gloves in the first place...

...now lets talk about no UFOs.....

go observe Mikes burgers see how they do it... maybe it was done justs for me the other night ..not really sure....

I highly doubt that they change their gloves with every burger at Mike's and Subway but stranger things have happened. Farangdanny, do your staff change the gloves between every burger? As for the analogy between a doctor and a food preparer, you must be joking.

It is still more sanitary to wash your hands after you pick your nose and before you cook the burger than to give the false conception of sanitation using dirty gloves.

maybe loosing the point here ...

First off a doc doing surgery ie. putting his hands into your body . now a food man preparing food that is going right into your body.... filth is filth entering the body people must be more than prudent in both cases sited above ....both the good doctor and the people preparing the food we eat...Please this is the whole problem lack of basic health practices!!.

Now rationalising that Mikes and Subway are as dirty as others because they use the approved sanitary method washing hands and wearing plastic gloves for food preparing.... In USA state code for most all states... lets give Mikes burger and subway a big A for effort and move on!

secondly, they don't wash their hands??? this is the whole reason for health codes on hand washing and plastic gloves.you have to do BOTH!!

Maybe in Thailand it is a bit of a free for all and somewhat loose and easy with health codes maybe not sure ...

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY MIKE'S BURGERS is the KING of Chiang Mai!!! He seems to have figured it out being from USA and have owned large restaurant he is familiar with prevention.. he is proactive on health and the being clean issue of food prep.

#1- you can see the food being prepared in front of your eyes

#2-every tme i have dined at Mikes burgers the workers put on plastic gloves.

it seems i am maybe arguing with local restaurant owners about health issues. if this offends some i can not be sorry. My reason is i have been fed food here in CM more than once that has made me very sick. One time it was so bad i was hospitalised back in 1991 at Lanna .

How the food is handled that we pay money to eat is no joke!

I am done with this thread no more comments from the gatorhead but 333=9 so i feel very lucky to be here in CM everyday of my life!!

FYI

Since 1993, and particularly after the 1997 version of the FDA Food Code, states began adopting the FDA Food Code and its provisions. Many incorporated realistic changes to the bare-hand contact prohibition section 3-301.11. The three most notable examples are Texas, California and Florida, which have been able to effectively work with industry to improve hand-washing compliance, protect public health and allow limited bare-hand contact at retail.

It's clear from their actions that these states have determined that there is no conclusive evidence that the mandatory use of gloves or utensils affords any greater level of protection in a restaurant setting than clean, washed hands. Furthermore, their solutions recognize that there are many circumstances in food service settings in which it is logistically impossible to avoid all bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat foods. Common tasks such as peeling shrimp, filling tacos, peeling fruit and steadying hot foods all potentially require direct hand contact.

Clearly, the current FDA regulatory scheme to absolutely ban bare-hand contact is impossible to comply with and not supported by scientific data (Fendler at al, Part I, 1998). It's clear our belief that food contact with unwashed, contaminated hands or gloves can be a source of foodborne illness (Torok et al., 1997), and that responsible and effective action should be taken to effectively address this problem.
