Books Set In Thailand

Recommended Posts

I just finished reading 'The Beach' which I couldn't put down and thoroughly enjoyed, I watched the film last week (before I started the book) and I found the book a lot better (which usually seems to be the case). Are there any other fiction novels that you would recommend which are based in Thailand? I've read Private Dancer online which I also couldn't stop reading although it was canny short anyway. I'm not sure how else I would go about finding such fiction. Yes I know I can google such a thing but I'd rather buy books that are recommended and easy to find. And yes this has no doubt been done to death over the years. :)

Here's some more good ones:

Definitely Christopher G. Moore.

Books by Timothy Hallinan: "A Nail Through The Heart," "The Fourth Watcher," and "Breathing Water, A Bangkok Thriller" (To be released soon.)

"Platform" by Michel Houellebecq (One reviewer wrote: "Michel is a civil-servant, an account manager at the Ministry of Culture. He is single, and likes his pleasures pre-packaged: game shows, TV movies, pornography and instant mash. When his father is murdered and he comes into some money, Michel takes leave of absence to go on a package tour to Thailand...")

Enjoy!

Try looking at www.bangkokbooks.com most of the titles are about Thailand and SE Asia. Even Thai Girls Cry was quite a good read, as was the Farang Affair. These books are generally available in a lot of book shops in Thailand or you can order from the web site.

Good Daughter by Bjorn Turmann.

"a tale of cross-cultural intrigue and personal discovery. Set in Thailand, it follows the journeys of six characters: two intelligent, imaginative Thai bargirls, a paranoid, well paid American expatriate and his cynical, corrupting Australian mentor, a young American university graduate and an Isaan villager whose reoccurring presence borders on the mythical. Combining entertaining and dramatic narrative with poignant psychological themes, this is a novel that challenges the reader to look beneath the surface in order to try and understand what influences the characters' behaviour At the conclusion of the story we are shown that, by releasing ourselves from that which binds us, we are able to attain greater hope and, ultimately, freedom."

ISBN 979-99888-0-2

Enjoy!

If you like historical novels:

The Falcon of Siam - A Historical Novel by Axel Aylwen

I recommend the above book (Facon of siam) as the most literary book to be had. Bangkok 8 by Burdett the best thriller. The other two in the trilogy not neally as good. Try to avoid Bangkok Book house publishers as it is basically a vanity press. Although the 'Butterfly Trap' by Dennis Jon is pretty good. Asia Books have stopped publishing but you can still get some reprints, I quite liked Morgan McFinn's three books. Bangkok Express is a good read. 'Conffesions of a Bangkok Private eye' - written by Stephen Leather but based on P.I Warren Olsons memoirs is pretty neat. If you want to read something really strange then 'losing the plot' by Chuckwow. Oh and anything by David Young - Sukuhmvit Road especially.

Theres loads of fiction out there. Enjoy.
