People might need a little more information than you have provided... i.e. Age, Nationality, Work experience, Qualifications, Safety Certification for working offshore (offshore survival and emergency training, helicopter underwater escape training), Intended work / position, In most cases if not all, I imagine the work carried out by westerners anywhere in Thailand encompasses specific skills or education. Soutpeel Posted August 5, 2009 Share Posted August 5, 2009 OP, I work offshore in the Gulf of Thailand and simple answer...forget about it.....the GOT is undergoing some serious nationalisation on all fronts and unless you have some very highly specialised skills which are in demand and a Thai national cant do it...you dont have a chance. Earlier this year the DMF laid down the gauntlet as regards nationalisation in the GOT and below a certain job level you will not be approved for a work permit. I have been working in the GOT for nearly the last 8 years and the number of farangs involved is reducing by the year, and basically at the moment unless you are at a company man level/Well services supervisor or technical specialist as a farang, you will not get a job on a rotational basis (long term)...even this will go to ratsh*t over the next 3-5 years and most farangs I know working here are looking towards Vietnam or Cambodia (if it even happens) once the farang work dries up...which it will... Somebody mentioned Mermaid Maritime, yes possibilities on short term jobs if you dive SAT, ROV pilot, LST etc etc...but these jobs generally last 2-3 months and thats it for the year. In summary, if you dont have any offshore experience and trying to get in at a "newbie" level forget about it...if you are serious about the offshore game, go and get skills which are in demand and get experience and you stand a chance working just about where ever you want in the world....certainly been my experience Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

ericthai Posted August 5, 2009 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Dude, like they said you asked a vague question, so we dont know anything about you. So if you dont have any experience forget about it. If you really want to do this type of work then go get trained and get on with a company. You can get yourself set up working 4-5 weeks on, 3-4 weeks off or close to this depending on the job you are doing and the company. With this you can stay in Thailand when off. Only kidding... But yes...a very valid point...known of many who started working offshore and were very competant in their jobs, but ended up getting run off, just because of their attitude...Strangely enough...usually the bubbleheads...must be something they are breathing in the gas mix... As others have mentioned, without experience, a specific skill set and the correct certification you have no chance. But if your aim is to live in Thailand and rotate to work in other countries then you might have a chance. Although unless you are at a senior level companies might be reluctant to pay for travel when locals can easily be employed. So..... If you are looking to start off as a roughneck etc.. your only chance would be to start off from home and work your way up to a level of seniority where you can work abroad.
