A Significant Event In Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

At 12.34 and 56 seconds tomorrow, Friday 7 August 2009, clocks in the real world (ie, non-USA) will give a combined reading of 12:34:56 7/8/9. As far as I can tell, this won't happen again for 100 years. (Our cousins in USA choose to put months before days - so they don't count when we're talking about "real" stuff!)

For those who can't see the significance here, try 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9.

I know you like being pedantic, bill

It won't happen in 100 years either.

12:34:56.7.8.9 will only happen once. -- tomorrow

In 100 yeras it would be .........7.8.19

And in Thailand the year is not 2009 is it?

Some people obviously have too much spare time.

Dude, that is like so last month's news . . . :)

BB, i'll definitely do something special to celebrate it. Will let you know later about it.

it is now 11:53 on August 5th 2009......and that will NEVER happen again

I just sprang this on two members of my wifes family. They look very baffled and will be back to ask me more questions tomorrow!

Translate the last sentence as the US already recognized this ‘incredible feat’ last month (30 days earlier).

Well..this is the first i personally have heard of that.

Thanks BB, will pass it on also.

Very interesting!

Sorry to be even more pedantic, caffa. But in 100 years from now the year will be 2109, so the 9 becomes the significant end to the sequence once again.

Well spotted, pointed out and so on . . . but . . . 'significant'? Puhleeeeease! :)

So the rational ordering of time units from smallest to largest--day, month, year--isn't real?

And oddly enough, it will also be the end of the sequence in 2209, 2309, 2409, 2509, 2609, 2709, 2809, 2909, 3009, 3019, 3029, 3039, 3049, 3059, 3069, 3079, 3089, 3099, 4009, 4109, 4209, 4309, 4409, 4509, 4609, 4709, 4809, 5909, but I'd imagine by this time there'll be no bugger around to give a sheet. :)

Off the top of my head, I would say it will happen again in 7 years........... and maybe more often depending upon where you are.

Since you are using only the year's last digit, what about 7 years from now when it is 2559?

EDITED TO ASK: Or don't you consider this part of the real world, too?

The Herald Sun reports:-

At exactly 56 seconds past 12.34pm today, the digital time will be 12.34.56-7/8/9. Miss the numerical nuance and it won't come again for another 81 years.

Seppos can ignore the event as the article goes on to explain:-

....In the US, where they write months and days the wrong way around, the magic moment came on July 8...

dam_n: missed it.

Don't feel bad about it. I was sleeping too :)

The earth didnt move for me, how about you? :)

Regarding the American date system, without getting into whats the correct way or not, can anyone explain to me why America chose to use the month/day/year system?

Probably the same reason they spell differently. pronounce words differently and drive on the wrong side of the road. It's a way to gauge the spread of there insidious culture.
