I am a UK national living and working in Thailand (own business). My multi-trip one-year B visa expires on 26 August, and I am going back to the UK to renew it. I intend to use the Thai consulate in Glasgow. My work permit is valid until 9 December. Should my work permit be enough to renew my visa in this case, or will I have to take other documents? Any advice appreciated.

You may have to have a letter on company letterhead - believe that is what consulates in home country want.

You will need letter from your company addressed to the consulate and you will have to also provide up to date company certificate from DBD, up to date shareholders list, Phor Phor 20 certificate, latest company accounts, your last thai tax return, recent company withholding tax (salary) return. Company documents need to bear company offiicial stamp and need signing by the company. Plus you will need to complete visa application form, enclose 2xphotos and processing fee. I have never been asked to provide WP.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I had a feeling I would have to supply all the paperwork which Thaiphoon lists, but last year when I applied for and received my first non-B visa I just gave the Thai consulate in Glasgow a short letter from my company saying they wanted to employ me. Is it the case that smaller consulates in your home country may not need so much back-up material? I can supply it, but if I can use a single letter (or WP) it would be more convenient.

Obtaining first Non-B visa from consulate outside the region requires minimal paperwork. For renewals, however, consulates want to see that the thai company/your employment is genuine, hence the need to providevmore paperwork as advised.

If you apply to Hull all they need is a copy of your work permit. I've done it several times now.

From their website:

Evidence substantiating purpose of visit:

Extra evidence, as detailed below, is required only for Non-Immigrant Visas Categories “B” and “ED”:-

Category “B” = Letter from sponsor or copy of company documents or valid work permit

Thai Bairn: Not doubting you because yes the Hull consulate website says the above. But that information conflicts 100% with details on other UK consulate websites. I have obtained/renewed my Non-B for 7 years through Birmingham and never a problem ...

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

The applicants must submit the following documents;

- Correct Fee

- Visa application form completely filled out & signed

- Passport with validity not less than 6 months after your return.

- Two passport sized photographs taken within the past six months

- Prepaid self addressed envelope (we recommend Special Delivery)

- Letter from a company stating the objective of the visit to Thailand ("B")

- Document showing correspondence with trading partners in Thailand. ("B")

- Letter of invitation from companies qualified to employ foreigners. ("B")

- Employment contract indicating rationale for hiring the applicant as well as his/her salary, position and qualifications (document must be signed by authorised managing director and affixed the seal of the company) ("B") I have never supplied

- Copy of Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (only in case the applicant has previously worked in the Kingdom ) ("B") I have never supplied

- Copy of corporate documents; namely 1) list of shareholders 2) business registration and business license 3) company profile 4) details of business operation 5) list of foreign workers stating names, nationalities and positions 6) map indicating the location of the company 7) Balance sheet, statement of Income Tax and Business Tax (Por Ngor Dor 50 and Por Ngor Dor 30) of the latest year 8) Alien income tax return (Por Ngor Dor 91) and 9) Value-added tax registration (Por Ngor Dor 20) , etc.("B")

- Copy of educational records of the applicant and letters of recommendation from the prior employers, identifying job description and length of service time. ("B") I have never supplied

How can there be such a wide variance in document requirements between consulates?

All I can say is that I did actually contact them directly to confirm what exactly they needed as I had read conflicting reports. They replied that a copy of the WP was enough, and thats what I have been doing ever since.

Hull does seem to be the most easy going of the consulates though.

I shall bear Hull in mind for the future. Would be interesting to see a copy of the MFA guidelines for visa issuance by consulates (assuming there are any :) ).
