Outright ban on elephants in the city

A telephone number has been issued for to report any sighting of such beasts in the city

At 2pm on March 1, Khun Pattanar Boonsawad, one of Pattaya's four deputy majors chaired a meeting about elephants. The exchange of ideas took place in conference room 305 at Pattaya City Hall. It's been felt by officials for a long time that those elephants that are paraded around the bars and other such tourist establishments are deemed to be unpopular with the tourists. Such activity can create traffic problems on Pattaya's road and be a potential danger to citizens and tourists if the animals becomes scared.

No specific details of accidents or incidents were spoke of at the meeting and neither were surveys distributed to confirm that these animals are indeed unpopular with the tourists.

Nevertheless, it was decided at the meeting to ban this practice outright and to set up a watchdog group to prevent animals from entering the city. A telephone number has been released to report any sighting of such beasts in the city, other than performing ones invited as part of a stage show.

I think that I`ve heard this before that elephants were not allowed to perform within the city limits....but we keep seeing the poor creatures being paraded around.

Only a week or two ago one went after a load of bananas because it was starving.

Whats the betting that we`ll still see the elephants, the poor monkeys and even the bears still being abused...

I'd doubt they'll be kept away from the bars - always see them. Guess time will tell.

yes, I see them nearly every night on my way home

It could also be the end of the bio-degradable speed bumps they often leave behind :o

They say that Chonburi is the Province with the most elephants in Thailand, as the wood logging has stopped. :o

Whats the phone number as I'll gladly report these people.

I hate to see this, the mahoots are very pushy and say only 20Baht to feed elephant. I've been with Thai's that also encourage me to buy as the elephant won't eat.

I just say, don't buy food and the mahoots won't bring elephants into town. Can't see it stopping though, just like cutting down on the baht busses :o
