Hi,

My plan is to marry my Burmese fiance in Thailand in October, I am British and on advice from a Thai consulate in the UK and the British Embassy in Rangoon we were told that Thailand would be a great place to marry, then for my fiance (by then wife) to return to Rangoon to apply for her spouse settlement visa and come to the UK. Now I have heard it might not be so simple, especially the Affirmation to Marry as Burmese cant marry foreigners. I had hoped that she could just say she was going to marry another burmese citizen in Thailand and get the letter without too much hassle but now im not so sure thats an option.

So has anyone married a Burmese citizen in Thailand? If so how hard/easy was it, and how long did it take?

Thanks in advance

You might want to do a search on that one. Burma doesn't want it's citizens to marry a foreigner and is most uncooperative. But if I recall correctly a member told that if you pay a good ammount of money you could get the letter from the embassy.

For other options I recommend contacting an NGO, like the Burmuse Border Consortium, they might know more about this. Just google them.

There are at least three lengthy Topics posted to this site over the last six months containing a lot of useful information about Burmese getting married in Thailand. As said, it can be done but with great difficulty. The difficult part is obtaining the Affirmation to Marry Certificate from the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, the rest is easy and can be accomplished in one day.

yep,

as i said in my pm to you - it's a major pain, and a lot of money. i believe there may also be a pay scale, so that people from poorer countries can pay slightly less, though they still have to pay and wait for a month for the certificates to come back from nay pyi daw.

i've got the details of a prominent american lawyer here, who helps out lots of burmese spouses migrating to the us. i can give you his details if you like. he's a lovely guy too by the way, and very generous with his time and advice.

I had a friend (italian) who wanted to marry a burmese girl living in Thailand. Italy in such case, for humanitarian reasons allow marriage of people without consent of their embassy, with a sentence by a judge.

Then he had problems with the girl and didn't marry her anymore, so I don't know exactly the procedure. Is it possible that England doesn't have similar procedure?
