Why Non-americans Think America Is A Joke?

As an American I always hear cracks (especially from Europeans & Aussies) about guns in America. Coming from San Francisco where there are around 200 homicides a year I know that it maybe not far off.

For someone who has never been to America would this make you think that every American is a gun totin' yahoo w/ giant mural of George Bush on their walls?
