Why Do Thais Always Do This ?

Featured Replies

I am sure that I am not the only person this happens to.

(Let me know if I am wrong.)

Why is it that whenever I approach a thai / group of thais, they look at me like i am an idiot?

Now, some of you will straight away be thinking, ah, he must be *doing* something stupid. I don't think so. Unless actually approaching them is stupid. And remember, This is before i even open my mouth.

I so often see this expression on them that it has started to irritate me. In fact it makes me feel confrontational. I keep cool when it happens. I want to look them in the eyes as an equal, but in these situations i feel like it would be an affront to them (because they obviously have such low regard for me that they would not like such a low life considering themselves and equal.)

I would like to know what farangs have done to make all the thais (especially the men) think we are such fools.

Must be just you...

Kind of over-assumptive, I sense. :o

But, just because you're Paranoid, doesn't mean they're not really after you! :D

Try smiling as you walk up to them.

Never had this problem myself.

Change your.....

1) Hairstyle

2) choice of clothes

3) attitude

4) all of the above

Seriously....you must be doing something wrong....

Did you fix the hole in your pants?

Seriously though, either you're paranoid or you're assuming what other people are thinking about you. Why don't you just ask them? Me, as a thai guy, i snarl at all people :o No need to quote gump here...

Perhaps more of your attitude is coming through in your facial expressions and body language than your realize. When I play poker, some players always seem to be able to tell how strong my hand is, and I haven't the foggiest how.

I agree it has to be you, your actions or just plain paranoia. Never had any problem myself.

Try smiling as you walk up to them.

Never had this problem myself.

Couldn't agree more, excellent advice,

.. anyone approaching me for any reason I subconsciously access for threat,

a look at their facial expression / body language, tells me everything I need to know in a millisecond, ( .. is this going to be good or bad for me ...)

A smile immediately disarms, :o

It must be you, I never had that experience the 15 years I have been coming to Thailand, try a smile :o

Yeah, it must be you.

Sounds like paranoida and generlaization to me.

Don't be too tense.

BTW, I'm a Thai.

Smile?!

I forgot that! I think you may be right. I actually forgot i am in the land of smiles.

And now i think about it, i remember a while ago saying that I should remember to do that when approaching people i don't know here as it is the cultural thing. The very next person i met i had a much better reaction.

I will try what you say again. I think you are right. :D

Is skinhead hair not a very good image here? I am tall relative to most Thais.

I wear sandals with no socks. (But long cargo trousers.) And a T-shirt with no collar usually.

How might that effect the image.

Good on you yeehi... lots of smiles will get you lots of miles... :D

As for your dress code, as long as you wear clean, well maintained, neatly ironed clothing... no problem.

Sandals with no socks is fine in public places like shopping malls or on public transport etc, but if you go to an upmarket hotel or restaurant, I would wear shoes & socks.

I suggest that a collared shirt like a polo shirt is probably better than a T-shirt.

Good luck.

:D

PS. Don't forget to smile... :D

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

The skinhead look doesn't go over very well here, it's true. Makes you look threatening, some might feel. I bet you'll get better vibes if you grow your hair out a bit.

I've got "skinhead hair", meaning I shave, but it has never caused any problem for me.

Dress code seems more important, shorts at home out here in the suburbs and pants downtown.

I am sure that I am not the only person this happens to.

Well, I'm a Brit, not Thai, but, dressed like that, you'd get a pretty cool reception if you approached me without good reason!
