Hi everyone,

In the light of all the recent murders, assaults, robberies, rapes and other ESCALATING crimes on foreign tourists and workers in various regions of Thailand I am looking for support to try and make the Thai authorities make information about these more readily available to people via internet or other media.

I myself have visited Thailand on 8 occassions and although 6 of these have been buisness related(and I have been escorted and generally looked after by Thai nationals) on the 2 occassions I have been holidaying on my own I have experienced the more sinister side of Thailand.

I have been mugged at knife point in a built up area(Police told me it was a rarity).

I have been assaulted in what was a set up involving the Police trying to get money(Fortunately a guy from the French Embassy and his bar owning associate intervened and the whole situation dissolved. The two Farang would'nt even accept a drink as thanks)

My room at my hotel was burgaled and if not for the inroom electronic safe who knows what I'd have been left with.(No sorry,no compensation and no sympathy of any kind from hotel manager).

I could not even count the amount of times I have been ripped off by the hundreds of scams or just greedy, devious and untrustworthy Thai's it has

been my misfortune to encounter.(Not exactly information given by holiday companies and or travel providers).

Many of you on this site will now start on me.........I am quite aware of the love affair that exists between a lot of foreigners and this country but I would like the chance to defend myself beforehand.

I have travelled to nearly every corner of the Globe and up until Thailand I have not encountered anything other than harsh words due to a driving error

or maybe paying a little over the odds for local crafts.I am a fit, tall, strong and intelligent male and therefore not the usual demographic for an easy target.

I am street savvy(believe it or not)!

It's time for Farang to take a stand and get the Government to do something positive to protect us.......It's time for Travel Agents etc to give lot more

information other than "The Land Of Smiles" crap that is continuously thrown at us!To be honest and I hope you all are......the smiles are only there when a good tipper or fat wallet are recognised.

So lets hear the backlash...and before the ranting please remember the many families of the countless foreigners to Thailand that were'nt as lucky as myself...

I'm not trying to have a go at you here, but you do seem rather unlucky. Is it possible that you are not approaching situations with the requisite caution? I suspect you are exaggerating somewhat.

You could be right about the luck but there is no exaggeration.I would also say that caution does'nt enter into some of my experiences.Who knows.....everyone can draw their own conclusions from their own experiences.

Cheers

Well, if you have been taken in by 'hundreds' of scams, isn't it time for you start avoiding the place? Either that, or maybe wising up a bit to the scams?

I'm sure if I were out there in places where I would be likely to run into types who might scam me, then I might have a greater chance to get scammed- but somehow I seem to avoid those places and people most of the time.... is it luck? Is it Thailand? Or is it behaviour and practicing responsibility?

And, in terms of safety- by now you should know that safety is not a big priority here for anyone. It's not discrimination against foreigners! :)

I don't think you even bothered finding out the meaning of the word or what context it can be used.

Since you are obviously in need of some help in this area......

What catagory is it I fit into?

From the ThaiVisa forum rules:

5) Not to post inflammatory messages on the forum, or attempt to disrupt discussions to upset its participants, or trolling.

Trolling can be defined as the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet by posting controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

Try reading the rest of them. :D

I apologise......none of the above was my intent!

I genuinely feel in the light of recent events that something is long overdue in being done!

Anyway thanks for your input.

It isn't ok for him to be rude, but it is for you?

I don't think your problems have been so much bad luck, but rather that you've apparently been hanging out in the wrong places/with the wrong crowd. Come visit Isaan where your luck might take a turn for the better.

A lot of peoples problems have 'drinking' in common. Without knowing all the details, which I'm not interested in, the story you mentioned with the bar owner would lead someone to believe there may have been some of that in your situation.

The info you put down for yourself-

Maybe the thugs know your from Scotland, and will be released from any criminal charges and or incarceration on humanitarian grounds for scamming you.

Thanks.....was that discrimination?

Can we now get back to keeping this forum on a more serious level.

Sorry about my behaviour but that guy really got my back up!Would love to explain the bar thing but would take to long.I had'nt been drinking as I was diving next day.

I guess the Thai prison thing was also attitude brought on by him not taking the forum seriously.

Thanks for the advice and I will take it on board.

Cheers!

Allow me to quote some of your comments:

" myself have visited Thailand on 8 occassions and although 6 of these have been buisness related(and I have been escorted and generally looked after by Thai nationals) on the 2 occassions"

"could not even count the amount of times I have been ripped off by the hundreds of scams"

"I have been mugged at knife point"

"I have been assaulted"

"My room at my hotel was burgaled"

And you still had time to go diving..... :)

I am street savvy(believe it or not)!

"hundreds of scams" - is this the same scam hundreds of times? Or hundreds of different ones? Or a smaller number of scams that you have fallen for multiple times?

Can you give us a list of the 50 most common scams that you have fallen victim to?

"I am street savvy(believe it or not)"! - but obviously not on Thai streets.

I think you are being a bit harsh matey, have a look at the BBC web page every night and you will see more mugging stabbing etc than you do in Thailand on average.

As for being all over the world, well so have I and belive me I find this the most comfortable place to get along. Now either you are plain unlucky as pointed out or you are not being street smart ( your words) There are different street smarts for every country you find yourself in, it's just a matter of being more aware of your surroundings and perhaps listening to advice from long stayers.

So sorry I cannot agree with your running down of Thailand and although it has it's pitfalls what county dosn't.

I hope you continue to visit Thailand as it is not as bad as you are painting it.

Cheers

I have been travelling and living on and off, sometimes solo, other times with family in Thailand for the last 20 years. We have been here permanently for the last 6 years.

Stayed at some of the most seediest places, been just about everywhere in the country and I can honestly say, hand on heart, that neither myself or any of my family members living here have ever been involved or been victims of any unpleasant incidents here.

Perhaps you visit iffy areas or have an attitude problem or just get involved with the wrong type of people.
