You should really make an attempt to understand what you've read before you hit the reply button.

What have tattoos to do with this stuff? Please let's not talk shit. Tattoos if done by professionals are totally safe.

Tattoos are an unnecessary cosmetic procedure.

Braces, in the case of this teenage girl and many other Thais, are an unnecessary cosmetic procedure.

Both, when performed by professionals, are routine and very safe, but not "totally" safe.

It's an "analogy" ( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/analogy ), used to make the point that the issue isn't that a person had an unnecessary cosmetic procedure -- many of those are already socially accepted and routine and this is just another (newer) version of those.

The problem here - i suppose - is that the 'doctor' was not a doctor.

Ya think?

BTW, those things happen every day also inside hospitals and clinics. Sometimes it happens, just that. That said, it's really sad to die for a stupid thing like that.

Yes they do and yes it is.

And the focus, in my opinion, should be on the person who performed the procedure, and ALL people in Thailand who perform medical or "medical-like" procedure without the proper training and background to do so, and also on the doctors who treated this girl in the hospital.

The focus should NOT be on the use of braces for cosmetics. Perhaps you think that it should be (I'm not sure from your defensive response). If so, I'd ask why you think death-by-braces is more tragic than death-by-tattoo. A quick google will show you how frequently that happens, as recently as this year, in the UK -- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthne...e-infected.html

Tattoos only have a cosmetic goal, and I assure you, even if done under the most stringent safety, are NOT totally safe.

How very sad. RIP young lady.

A curious assessment by the medical examiner that she suffered from profound, acute Thyroid poisoning.

Heavy metals like Mercury, r@dioactive elements such as Ur@nium and r@dioactive Iodine have an affinity for the Thyroid and could cause such effects.

There are potent, specific Thyroid toxins such as Quinine and Phenylthoicarbamate but how was she poisoned and with which agent is a matter for a forensic pathologist.

She didn't succumb to an infection that rapidly (not in a healthy 17 year old) and the note that she had "Thyroid Poisoning" points to a specific pathogen that was ingested either during the procedure from dental tools or from the metals in the braces themselves.

A note to the Health and Safety investigators: Look at possible unauthorized r@dioactive metal reclamation, Iodine, Mercury and Phenylthiocarbamate poisoning in your toxicology investigations.

I hope you guys have Mass Spectrum Gas Chromatography at your disposal.

I came home a couple of months ago after a few days away, only to go '<deleted> mad' as my young sister-in-law had been and had a latex implant put in the bridge of her nose to raise it, as her Thai boyfriend wanted her to have a more 'western nose'! The boyfriend left her three weeks later, if I catch him he wont need gender reassignment to be female. Girls over here are going to crazy lengths to be fashionable. Many girls are having treatments involving injecting Latex!!! This has caused many horrific complications as some 'practioners' have been using industrial Latex. I think the coloured brace thing is all down to the 'ugly Betty' craze, I know there is an Asian equivalent soap started up, aimed at teenagers.

Condolences to the family

Hi Tigs, I hear you.

My Mrs. insisted for the longest time to get a nose implant,

she found a reputable MD and it was done cheap well and fast AND SAFELY.

She does look very nice with it and feels better about herself... fair play, 6,000baht.

But a friend of ours tried the 1,500 baht version, seems some brain dead katoey was touting

nose impant injections... using chicken cartilage... like breast backbone... INSANE.

But this lady did it, before I had the opportunity to say; NO DON"T!!!!!!!!!!

and her nose got royally infected and swelled and then she had to

have a real MD scrap the crap out, but by that time it was eating the real nasal cartilage

now her nose is collapsed like a impotent grandpaw.. so incredibly sad.

The perpetrator of course sodded off, though we later heard 'supposedly'

died suddenly in another province and had few mourners... Who knows.

TIT.

I really like the look of the cute Asian noses. why would they want to change their cute little noses ?

Same idea as the want to be white.

The great bugabo for Thai women:

Keeping up with the Jones's and the peer pressure aplied by other women.

Kow Tow one-up-manship extended into their very bodies...

I must note that bobbing in the knob, is easily 10 times less expensive that augmenting the fun bags.

What does thyroid poisoning have to do with gluing some coloured things onto teeth and connecting them with a wire??

Something does not add up here IMHO.

Extraordinarily bad metal choice, with some sort of doping, it then leaching into her gums.

If it was lead... mercury, cadmeum or any other heavy metal never intended

for long term body fluid immersion, such as acidic saliva, it can be very, very bad.

It is not likely that the MD / intern /etc who saw her could have realized

she was being slowly poisoned, when so many other MORE likely things would come to mind.
