I was just watching Mad Men on one of the True channels and whenever they went to put a cig in their mouth it was edited out.

Is this a voluntary thing or done by law?

Thanks.

I get the impression that it's a legal requirement -- one I've always laughed at. They do the same thing with guns -- use a mosiac effect to blur them out. The only problem is that these objects are obviously guns and cigarettes, and the extra effort to make them less visable has the opposite effect -- you're drawn to them more than if they didn't childishly try to blur them. I think it's a good indication of how imaturity and superficiality are so predominate in Thailand. I like Thailand and Thais, and this type thing makes me sad as it doesn't reflect well on the country.

Yeap, all smoking and guns pointed at people are blurred. They even censor smoking in The Simpsons. When Bart is blowing bubbles from a pipe. :)

But the documentaries here are something else, with close ups of dead people in the streets.

Of course if someone in the backgound is smoking, that is pixeled, to make sure the young viewers are not exposed to anything bad.

Yes, the hypocrisy of it is laughable, but it's part of the fascination of Thailand. Very little makes sense to someone with an open mind.

I guess it is similar in the West where a violent movie will get a 12 rating and anything with a bit of sex or nudity gets an 18.

Doesn't really make sense to me.

Showing people smoking on Television is banned. But strangely, showing a man executing a girl with a pistol is not. STRANGE!!!! (insert Twilight Zone music here...)

Hello, they blur smoking but they still sell cigs relatively inexpensive in LOS. They should be serious about telling people it is a bad thing to smoke by a much bigger tax on cigs, and more people could not buy it so health care and the emotional costs of the families of the people that die from smoking related illnesses will not be as much.

Understand the intention, and it is good.

However, we smokers will just start to make different priorities of what we spend our money on, and end up smoking almost the same amount of sigs.

And then the black marked will explode as there will always be someone that manage to get cheaper sigs, from various sources.

I bet 99,9999% of us smokers have accepted the fact that it is very very dangerous to smoke, but still we do it.

I know, it is really a weird thing.

2 medical doctors I know personally also smoke.

I guess a total ban is the only way.

Not higher prices, or what they do on tv here, or hide the sigs behind the counters (where they sell them), or scary posters and pictures, etc, etc.

A total ban is the only way.

But then again, I guess I will eventually stop.

So the 20% increase in tax in April was just a small increase in your eyes?

Edit// To clarify, it was a 20% price increase driven by a tax increase, so probably more like 40-50% tax hike

Can only speak for myself.

But yes, I still find the sigs here in Thailand extrememly cheap.

How much does it cost to buy a drink or a beer in a night club? And more important, how long time to consume it?

Then, how long time to consume one back of sigs?

That is how I look at it.

I tried to watch Cocktail with Tom Cruise a few years back.

What a waste of time, there were about 6 sometimes 7 pixels in the whole movie that were broadcast normally, the rest was just a blur.

I remember years and years ago there was a curtain you could buy to place over the tv screen that would change the tv picture to look like a disco light, Thai tv always reminds me of that 80s contraption.

hopefully you do not have HBO...

because if a curse word is used, they beep it out or with a blank, when there is violence in a scene (300, predator, doom) they cut the action

little passion scene ... cut

they even have alternate endings for movies ... different from European not censored versions ( butterfly effect, ....)
