Has anybody had any experience with orthopedic surgery in Chiang Mai? If so, who was the surgeon and where did you have the surgery?

I fell while rock climbing down in Krabi and shattered my heel, detaching the Achilles tendon. I have good insurance, and they do direct billing through Chiang Mai Ram, but I am free to use any facility I like. I can also go to Bangkok if that means better care. I heard good things about a Dr. Chanakarn at Rajavej Hospital. Does anybody have his contact info? Does anybody have any recommendations of people or places to go or stay away from? I live in Chiang Mai, so that would be easiest, if good care is available.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Chanakon/Chanakot was great. Ask a Thai to call Rajivej. His data is somewhere in CMai forum....

well if its any use, i had a total hip replacement at ram 6 weeks ago, and couldn't have asked for any more,well on the way to recovery, another 6 weeks and hopefully i'll be on a golf course introducing myself to some of the freaks on here, just one note of caution, bring your own food

I recommend Dr. Sudhee Sudasna, US board certified, speaks flawless English, good communicator and sympathetic. Operates only at Ram AFAIK. 053-214139

That's good to hear. I have been seeing Dr. Paiboon. My insurance said that I am welcome to get a second opinion and try to find the best person for the operation. Does anybody know if any of them are ankle specialists? Is there such a specialty?

i'll second that, he was one of the 3 surgeons who dealt with my hip, character, likes a giggle, he was the main man for me.

no experience yet, but went to ram a few weeks back to see about excision (or other treatment) of a morton's neuroma. without xrays or exam, jeepers without even taking off my shoe,

the first floor 'doctor' said sure he could cut that bugger out. how much experience does he have with this procedure? same as me....none....but he'll give it a shot. 400 baht please.

i have heard good reports of a doctor suthee, orthopedic surgeon with a small office/clinic on superhighway at siritorn rd. i spoke to his nurse and he's done three of this type procedure

this year alone. she seemed well informed which is a good sign. i'm planning on a visit with him later this month. he operates at ram. pm me if you need contact info.

I had the operation in Feb.

The pain from the Neuroma is gone but I still have a little pain from the operation site.

I will admit I was not the best patient as I cannot stay in bed for long.

I was walking on it extensively from 2 days after op.

Don't go to Lanna. I had a botch job on one of my fingers, I actually think a piece of my tendon is still exposed after a year.

I would also highly recommend Dr. Sutee. Not only is he a first rate doctor, but a very decent man as well. He is always trying to find ways for patients to save money and actually quit working with one hospital because he felt they were charging too much. With what I know now, if I didn't live in thailand and I need orthopedic surgery, I would travel here to be treated by Dr. Sutee.

My elderly mother had a very good experience with shoulder surgery after a multiple fracture. Dr. Preecha at Ram.

I was responsible for her care, and I was quite impressed by this Dr. His English is good, he seems to be up-to-date on methods, and he was very good on follow-up after surgery.

The only thing I don't like about Ram is they don't have a "team" approach like they do at Sripat - the internist (Padungkiat) and the surgeon (Preecha) were sometimes working at cross-purposes, but they never set up any meeting together with the patient at the same time, only communicated by notes. This is the same you'd get in the USA, but I like the team approach at Sripat better, where they coordinate the patient visits occasionally to agree on treatment plan. You might want to see if Dr. Preecha has hours at Sripat!
