UBC journalist in drug bust

By THE NATION

Published on September 6, 2009

Police yesterday morning arrested UBC football news reporter Pornphrom Julakathappa along with four others for participating in ecstasy-taking party in a house in Soi Lat Phrao 93.

The journalist claimed later he had only taken drugs two to three times - in a bid to find information about which sportsmen were taking drugs.

Nine ecstasy tablets, 0.6 grams of powdered ecstacy and drug taking tools were seized by police.

The Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court released the journalist and two other suspects late yesterday after relatives posted bail of Bt350,000 each.

Ahh yes. The infamous research excuse. Doesn't usually work for those outside of bondafide research studies. Just ask a fellow named Pete that was nicked visiting websites with images deemed to be illegal in the UK.

I guess he'll have to find work writing up som tam reviews or advertising copy for Dr. Prik's nip & tuck emporium once he gets canned.

Investigative Journalism run amok?

Nice attempt to pull his bacon from the flames.

In Thailand it just might work too.

Other than most investigative journalists get shot early on.

Who? :)

Actually he was cleared of this. But unfortunately, mud sticks.

Actually he admited he was looking at child porn and came up with the excuse that he was surfing the net one night and stumbled upon it (Likely story) and so he had to go back to view it again because he was doing a story on child abuse and child porn (Very convienient).

Actually P.T. called police and reported the sites,

and in their infinite wisdom, checked his computer, and the broswer had cached the images,

so technically they were on his computer, so they arrested him.

Even though HE called them to report the sites.

He was wrestling with his personal demons as an abused child,

and part of that fight was to rid the world of child porn sites, he thought.

He realized quickly that not all police think logically about citizens reporting crimes.

It was all quashed and they apologized,

but recommended he not continue to find sites to report.

Still mud sticks.

P.T. is nothing like nutjob diddler Gary Glitter for instance,

who no doubt had made it harder for Townsend to be believed...

I thought it was now called True-Visions and no longer UBC?

Can't offend True now can we? :)

Lol, i bet True is having an absolute fit that they can't get rid of the UBC moniker. Its been almost 3 years now. Old habits die hard.

Hard to say if it is just the usual poor journalism or deliberate to keep True's name out of the paper.

That was the truth of the story, and they charged with him child pornography offences.

He was cautioned but not formally convicted and placed on the "sex offenders list".
