Govt promises not to interfere in local media

BANGKOK: -- The government will forge for good relations with local media, and will not interfere in their work, the new Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, Suranant Vejajiva, has promised.

Mr. Suranant told journalists here today before the first cabinet meeting of the Thaksin 2 administration that the government would respect the independent role of the media, and would not interfere in their work.

The government would, instead, forge for good relations with the media and seek for their cooperation in helping create sound understanding between the state and the general public, and in publicizing government policies and information to them.

"I'll work closely with the new Government Spokesman to promote sound relationship with local media to seek for their cooperation in helping create good understanding between the state and the public and in helping publicizing government policies and information to the public", Mr. Suranant, who was the former spokesman of the ruling Thai Rak Thai (TRT) Party, stressed.

He said he believed that all parties, namely the politicians and the media, would realize their own responsibilities to the public and the nation when working independently for the sake of the societal and national benefits to the utmost.

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed Government Spokesman, Pol. Gen. Chalermdej Jombunud, told journalists that he would perform the best to fulfil his duties and responsibilities as the Government Spokesman.
