Thaksin and red shirts to be under watch

Writer: BangkokPost.com

The situation during the months of September and October is usually fragile and may open way for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the red shirts to step up their activities, PM's deputy secretary general and acting government spokesman Panithan Wattanayakorn said on Tuesday.

Mr Panithan said the red shirts may take this opportunity to create violence, probably in the hope to force cancellation of the Asean Summit scheduled to be held in Hua Hin of Prachuap Khirikhan and Cha-am of Phetchaburi in October.

"The situation between September and October must be closely watched. From history, political changes tend to take place during this period when there are reshuffles of government officials and the distribution money from the national budget begins," he said.

The spokesman said the government has been reported that on Sept 19 there will be a demonstration of tens of thousands of people from all over the country. Details of what they will do are expected to be known two weeks in advance.

The government will be specially vigilant. Troops protecting Government House will be increased from one to three companies. The same operational plan, which was originally intended for Aug 30, will be used to maintain law and order, Mr Panithan said.

The spokesman said Thaksin, knowing that the situation is fragile, has stepped up building political terbulence through twitter or facebook on the internet and even a state-run media to achieve victory.

"If the situation during this period can be put under control, the atmosphere in the country would change for the better. The economic condition would begin to improve in a V shape. The people would be in a mood for festivities and travels as the New Year is drawing near. Nobody would be interested in politics. Calls for House dissolution would die down because coalition parties and the people would not want a new election," Mr Panithan said.

On Thaksin's show of willingness to hold talks with the government, Mr Panithan said the former prime minister is interested in talks only over two issues - the 76-billion-baht assets and legal cases against his family.

He said, however, that negotiations are hard to materialise because Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has repeatedly said Thaksin must first return to see justice and accept the country's judicial system.

If during this period Thaksin could not bring down the government, his chance of regaining his former status would be slim. Thaksin would continue to be left wandering abroad and his political activities would be more limited, said Mr Panithan.

The spokesman said he believed Thaksin would after that move closer to Thailand conduct his political activities close to the border to keep the masses loyal to him to be on alert and wait for a chance to re-enter the country.

I think the PM should continue governing and ignore thaksin completely and let the Law be interested in Thaksin convection and illegal activities

Why doesn't someone engage their brain before making such ridiculous statements such as this. Bearing in mind this is a spokesman for the government.

It's now or never everyone. Don't get nervous now. It's ok though, there will only huge nationwide protests, but the nice protesters will tell us what they will do beforehand!!!!

The spokesman said Thaksin, knowing that the situation is fragile, has stepped up building political terbulence through twitter or facebook on the internet and even a state-run media to achieve victory.

We are admitting it's fragile. Please come and visit, invest your money, the next 2 months are going to be just hunkey dorey. In the meantime, expect us to censor every form of media as we see fit.

If during this period Thaksin could not bring down the government, his chance of regaining his former status would be slim. Thaksin would continue to be left wandering abroad and his political activities would be more limited, said Mr Panithan.

We are going to hang on by our fingernails for the next 2 months or so and hope he goes away.

The spokesman said he believed Thaksin would after that move closer to Thailand conduct his political activities close to the border to keep the masses loyal to him to be on alert and wait for a chance to re-enter the country.

If that fails he is going to go nuclear and go for broke probably through Cambodia so please expect limited military skirmishes.

WHERE DO THEY GET THESE IDIOTS FROM! What kind of message is this? The aching pessimism, lack of planning, desperation and futility of their apparent plight is laid out in the Bangkok Post. AREN"T THEY SUPPOSEDLY IN CONTROL?

Have you ever heard someone in a current government anywhere in the world say that they are worried about an exiled criminal launching an insurrection by TWITTER! I might despise the bloke, but can't they get Mandelson over here on a short term contract to manage the message a bit better than this.

I am trying to come up with analogies for how dumb these types of statements actually are. It would be like Alex Ferguson standing up on the first day of the Premier League and telling the world, we have no chance, if we don't get relegated, I will be surprised.

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS if this is all they can say.

Actor Methee Amornwuthikul swings wild punches at fellow Puea Thai Party official over election expenses row

Rage at those he accused of shaming his beloved Puea Thai Party prompted actor-turned-red shirt Methee Amornwuthikul to turn his action-movie fighting into reality in front of a shocked crowd yesterday morning. The victim later filed an assault complaint against the actor at Bang Rak Police Station.

Protest 'humiliated' party

The events were sparked after Adisarat Thampitak, director of Puea Thai Party's Election Centre in Surat Thani, led a 15-strong group to party headquarters to protest they hadn't been paid Bt800,000 spent on campaign materials for the August 30 by-election in Surat Thani.

Upset by the move, the soap-opera hard man confronted 53-year-old Adisrat and asked, "Why are you doing this? Who hired you? If you have a problem with someone, you talk to that person -- don't humiliate the whole party. Are you trying to pick a fight?"

Struggle turned into fight

Adisarat replied he had no intention to cause trouble, only to get the money the party owed them.

Methee then struggled with Adisarat over a microphone before punching him in the face and several times in the stomach as the shocked crowd of media members, party officials and onlookers watched. Methee then retreated to the party office to "cool down", leaving the astonished Adisarat with a slight head wound, a scratched left wrist and a missing wristwatch. "I've been helping the party all along -- I never expected this," he told reporters.

Head wound, police investigate

Adisarat, who received three stitches for his head wound at Lertsin Hospital, vowed to press charges against the actor. Police said it would take about a week to gather evidence.

Officials at the Election Centre in Surat Thani were commissioned to produce campaign materials for candidate Sompol Wichaidit, younger brother of Puea Thai party leader Yongyuth. After Sompol lost, they say they tried twice to collect the Bt800,000 campaign expenses but made no progress.

Methee explained his version of the fracas later in the day. He had gone to take the microphone off Adisarat as the protesters were causing a nuisance. But Meethee said he feared an assault from Adisarat so decided to attack first.

Just saw it on the evening news, one young fit "lor maak" bloke pounding away on a short middle aged bloke. Shouldn't take a week to gather evidence, it's there for all to see.

Seems tensions are rising and things at least on one side may be coming apart at the seams.

there are two topics in this thread. The first is essentially a non-item. It's non news. It's one or two newspaper guys speculating that some political dust-ups will take place in the next two months.

The next item is news of sorts. It's a Red Shirt pretty boy who watches too many violent movies - acting out his fantasies of being a tough guy - this time on an old timer, using sucker-punches (punching before the opponent is ready or knows it's coming). It's the age old strategy of a hot-headed coward.

And yes, the underlying reason is MONEY. Not enough of it channeled to pockets.

Message from Red Shirts: Please Mr Thaksin, please continue to flood your various front mobs (TRT, PPP, Pua Thai, etc.) with loads of money - so such embarrassing incidents don't happen in the future. We will continue to flatter and adulate you, oh great wise wealthy one, but please don't turn off the spigot of endless baht for your minions. For our part, we will work tirelessly to get the billions of baht unfrozen and return you to your rightful place at the top of the heap - so you can continue to promise to make us all wealthy.

Imploding?

Certainly the LOSS in Surat Thani humiliated the party big time...

http://www.siamdailynews.com/2009/08/31/de...ni-by-election/

Democrat candidate Thani Thaugsuban,

the brother of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban,

won 122,032 votes

while Puea Thai candidate Sompol Wichaidit,

the brother of Puea Thai Party Leader Yongyuth Wichaidit,

could score only 24,601 votes.

There were 14,786 ballots indicating abstention, according to the unofficial poll result.

Wupped his butt by 4.96 to 1... A LOSS of Five to one! Gadzooks!

Maybe the home office thinks that 800k was wasted money.

When they need the cash for Sept 19th to fill their ranks.

With 14 k towards PAD protest votes vs Suthep... when there wasn't even a PAD candidate...

(Oh yeah, the PAD and Dems love each other and are in cahoots.. right when pigs fly.)

Yeah stop these guys from talking something embarrassing, so take the mic and beat them up.

Why does this sound SO like S.O.P. Redshirt and TRT/PPP/PTP vs all others that oppose their views?

Lets hope this is a sign of more cracks, crackups and cockups yet to come,

in this coalition of the DAFT and mean spirited.

Is Steven Gerrard supposed to have ANY relevance to anything?

Beating up DJ's is an electoral sport? Who says all footbal hooligans are in the audience.

Politcal opponents who use sometimes violent street tactics to be watched by government. No news there. That wouldbe true of any government anywhere in the world. Another "look at me" wannabe beating up an old man. Quite disgusting and hopefully resulting in quick justice. Interesting that a few stories concernign reds and manoey not being wasted or not being disbursed are now surfacing.

Lets wait until someone accuses those reds brave enough to campaign in enemy territory of not being real reds. Oh wait a minute, never take a risk in his life actor man has already done that. Jesus if you are a red who do you look up to and take care of people willing to risk thei rlivelihood by campaigning against powerful polticians in a rivals backyard or soem arrogant idiot star of second rate movies who enjoys beating up old men? It will be interesting to see who the PTP hierarchy sides with here.

Could the mods clarify the rules regarding posting articles from Bangkok Post?

I thought due to the copyright issues only a couple of sentences can be posted.

Has anything changed?

It would really be a boon because access to Bangkok Post archives is not free, it would be easier to search for them on Thaivisa if they are freely posted here.

:) Yeah, because this is how all civil wars start!

Really... two sides that don't agree; shutting down airports, creating problems on the streets and with the economy... please tell me how civil wars are started because you must know! :D

Definition of civil war:

A war between factions in the same country

MMM... Let see you don't see the beginning stages yet??? Do you need glasses?

This may remind you: youtube.com/watch?v=Xx7vJfoDwmM

Remember it's only the beginning between these two! :D !!!!

Well with the Nation as a TVF partner I somehow think The Post allowing free access

and full posting to their competitor's web presence is a non starter.

I thought you were referring to the Ballot Boxing article, as that's what your post appears under.

Regardless, Thaksin's silly red balloon-chasing circus later this month will be a good indication of how "close" the country is to civil war. I'll still wager nowhere near.

He is clearly meaning civil war INSIDE REDLAND, not red/yellow.

within the umbrella holding PTP, UDD, DAAD, and others there is a potential civil war brewing.

Especially as Thaksin seems more marginalized at present.

Or at least is refocusing his monetary projection of power.

And the various ideological factions are appareantly not feeling like

sublimating their 'ideals' as much as before.

Songkran was a watershed event for sure.

Thai politics seems to thrive on factionalism, why should the red side be any different.

Only power and money hold MOST groupings together.

So what's the deal now?

The full BP article was posted by Webfact, a moderator himself.

If not for that, I'd just think a newbie made a little mistake, BP articles have been clipped to comply with copyright before.

Would be nice if the rule was lifted, there are plenty of articles that I want to quote but can't access on BP site.
