actually this amphibian does have protection in Thailand within the 'Wild Animals of the first category' list, under the Wild Animals Reservation and Protection Act, B.E. 2503 (1992)

found the listings; it appears to be on the list which means that a person can own one that was bred in captivity if they have a licsense to own one; rather like my petting zoo , all the wild animals were listed on me and i had a liscense to keep them for educational purposes (the animals on our national protected and preserved lists)...

anyhow, legally u need a licsense and therefore need a good reason to own one of these, and u can only get them from captive bred ones from liscensed newts.

i would actually like to post the article in the pin ups; do u think there would be a copyright problem if i were to copy and paste in?

bina, its an act of law so no need to worry about copyright - it exists to be seen, read & understood by all..

here is the 'Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act B.E. 2535 (1992)' in PDF form & taken direct from The Department of National Parks/Royal Forest Department (www.dnp.go.th) site..

http://www.dnp.go.th/wildlifenew/downloads...Translation.pdf

Also, here is the complete list of all 'first category' protected wild animals in Thailand, again in PDF form & from the DNP site..

http://www.dnp.go.th/wildlifenew/downloads...0Regulation.pdf

Finally, again from the DNP site & in PDF form is an article on Wildlife Conservation (also listing the 15 reserved animals that have the full protection of Thai law) that also defines 'protected' status in accordance with Thai law..

thanx goshawk, u saved me a trip to the jerusalem zoo library, i've been thinking of doing that but holidays here and all, too problematic...and thanx for finding the english part in that site. bttw, can u post me the links for the thai language regs? after all, most of us have an other half that reads thai and we may possibly have to point out the rules in original thai for those of us with hunters in the family...

so i will copy your post and pin it and close it to avoid needless discussion; just if u can give the the downloads for them in thai (but write next to them what each one is, i can also pin in same thread.)

thanx.

and for the want- to- be-new- newt owner, it means that if they are in the market (and there probably will be, but i dont know for sure), they are either bred in captivity but illegally bred and owned or wild caught and most likely illegally owned/sold. if u are a petting zoo/zoo/park owner, then u could apply to get a liscense to keep them. any other way is illegal.
