Two days ago, my 12 yr old son came down with a sudden high fever and over 24 hrs developed flu symptoms so we took him into the local private hospital where they did a throat swab and determined he had a virus......but it would cost us another 3000thb to confirm if it was the H1N1. We choose not to, as the meds were expensive enough.

We put him on tammiflu and will never know if it was the swine flu.

This episode makes me wonder about the government stastistics and doubt any figures they are posting on the spread of H1N1, as most people will decline the extra 3000thb to determine the strain of virus.

How will they determine where the outbreaks are if no accurate figures are taken??

Should I notify WHO on this irrisponsible practice??

I'm sorry to differ with you Carib, but statastics and Responsible monitoring CAN slow down the spread if the public is made aware of the 'hot spots' and can avoid them.

Maybe the Thai govmt doesn't want the people to know.....it will maybe convince the few remaining tourists to not come to 'the hot spot' this year.

In that case we all should avoid the world, the virus is everywhere.

I very much doubt that the WHO will even give you a sensible answer, if at all, but you can always try.

UK are not testing to see if people have the H1N1 anymore (just telling people to stay home and get somebody to get their drugs for them) once it gets past a certain level the resources are not enough to test everybody in the end they just estimate how many

They finally admitted on the news the other day that H1N1 is not as dangerous as all the hype... in fact, they even said it's proven less dangerous than the normal flu. I don't think WHO needs to know. :)

Every year around the world people catch a Cold or get Flu. There has been Indian Flu, Bird Flu, Pig Flu and I expect we will get Elephant Flu soon .

Many people do die , but when you look at the numbers , it is very low in comparison to high mortality rates such as Malaria .

Those who are in poor health and without proper medication are more suseptable , children are always victims , mainly as they are not old enough to take the medication at times or possibly as the parents dont consider it serious enough until the last minute to seek help . Older people also whos amune system isnt as strong as it used to be, maybe more prone also .

So , what is all the Fuss about. !!!

A Money Making Racket as per usual by fear Mongering Governments with those in power also Directors of Huge Pharmaseutical Companies and getting very Rich delivering medication that possibly isnt worth buying in the first place.

High Temperatures are normally kept at bay with Paraceatamol or Asperin , and if theres a chest infection , take anti biotics.

As one poster has already said , now they are saying its not as bad as we first thought . Like all the other stuff they keep churning out trying to intimidate us into a state of Fear.

You can slag me off if you want but open your eyes first as to what is happening with all this Bull-Sh*t they keep throwing about .

There will be so many millions infected that testing everyone is impractical. This is normal.

I do have a question. I recently had a flu that I suspect was the swine. I just sat it out, didn't visit a doctor. Again, this is normal unless there are complications. If a vaccine becomes available is there any reason not to get the vaccine if you may have already had the swine flu? This is more than an academic question as so many people have already had this flu and the majority do not ever get tested to see if it is H1N1.

If you had the flu but were never diagnosed with h1n1, then get the vaccine. It cannot reactivate the flu or something if that is why you are asking. If you had it already then it will be a waste of your money, but since you don't know...

A follow up on my boy's flu......after taking the first dose of tamiflu last night [as per the pharmacists instructions.....dispersed in a sweet syrup] he promptly vomited it up. His body weight called for a smaller dosage than the 75mg capsule. So I opened a capsule and disposed of approx 15mg and gave it to him. He kept that down for a half hr before barfing it up and I assume it was enough time to be absorbed because at some point during the night, his fever broke and he woke up feeling almost normal.

Reading the hand-out on tamiflu implies it is fast acting and it seems to be in our case. Meanwhile at the hospital doing the follow-up visit with the dr, we ran into a friend who has a daughter in my boy's class and she came down with it at the same time. My wife is going to speak with the head teacher and try to find out if other kids were infected at school.

We may never know what strain it is and it doesn't matter, as I'm now convinced that flu is flu and like women.....we'll never understand them and they will probably end up winning.
