I tried to apply for a re-entry permit at Immigration at a border crossing yesterday. The office has never been particularly helpful to put it mildly , but I was surprised when they said they couldn't process the re-entry permit and I had to go to my designated office 70 kms to apply in order to cross the border 500 metres away from this particularly Office. Seems a bit silly to me, Its a fairly easy process .

Just thought I would check if its true and give people a heads up so they don't make the same mistake.

Luckily I wasn't planning on travelling that day.

I guess the best way is to get your re-entry at the same time as you process your yearly extension.

It is the policy that you can only get a re-entry permit at your own immigration office for about 6 months now. You can't even get them at the airport anymore. This has lead to some surprises and lost extensions of stay.

From the many immigration rules, this one seems to make the least sense and serves no purpose.

In case of an emergency it should be possible to get a re-entry permit at the airport. But you will need proof of the emergency and so far I have seen only 1 report of someone who got a re-entry permit at the airport because of an emergency. Don't know if they will give a re-entry permit at a land border in case of a real emergency.
