Our Thai/Lao daughter (now in the USA) wants to go back to Thailand for college. While my wife and I do not consider this the smart move, the daughter has not been happy the four years she has been in Santa Barbara... I know, it's hard to imagine... Anyway, UT Rajabhat has come into the discussions (our Thai/Lao family live not far from NBL). I was wondering if anyone has any personal experiences with the university? I am particularly interested in her job prospects following graduation... Thanks in advance for all replies. :)

For a job in Thailand you will need a good education. A Rajabhat has university states, but as most Thai universities can not be compared with a university in the West. A good Thai univerity is much more expensive. Like Chiang Mai University or Mahidol in Bangkok.

You might get better answers about where to study if you tell what she wants to study.

Thanks, Mario. Unfortunately on her parents side (me), I cannot afford to send her to a top university in Thailand. Unfortunately, also, on the daughter's side, she has no clue as to what she wants to do. She just wants as easy a way out (away from parental and family control) as possible... If she were back in the village, she would get married within a half a year. Her ideal is for someone else to look after her. :)

Then any rajabhat will be fine. It is not up to our western standerds, but it is up to Thai standerds and accepted everywhere.

For any job in Thailand a degree is important and for many unfortunate kids this is a good option to get a chance to a better education and job they otherwise wouldn't have had.

Add to that the fact that she has 4 years of living experience abroad and hopefully speaks and writes English very well, she should be able to get a nice job. In future she could always try to go for her masters at a good university.

You can still find a pretty good uni at a reasonable cost.

For example Silpakorn in Bangkok. It's not at the top of the uni list, but their students are well respected in the job market. The costs of tuition and local accom are cheap. Becoming an English major may suit her if she has a native speaking parent (and lived in the US); it's a good degree to have if you want a job - she should earn a high GPA too which also helps in the job market.

To put it simply: A Thammasart Business English degree (or something similar) with a GPA of 4.0 would open up some doors... In this less than perfect world a degree in English from Silpakorn with, say, a 3.2 GPA (your daughter should gain higher than that if she applied herself) would be appreciated by many employers. A degree in, for example, South Asian history from an Issan rajabhat, and a GPA of 2.7 would close many doors.

Khon Kaen uni is also well thought of, if that's in your neck of the woods (I'm not sure what UT stands for).

It's really worthwhile spending some time to research the unis now. Good luck.

Thank you for the encouragement and suggestion, jasreeve17. I will check Sipakorn out, although I'm not wild about the idea of having my daughter in Bangkok. Her cousin lives there and he's had lots of opportunity to get it together, but he's just a loser. Same age.

Don't get me wrong. Kulthida is a straight 4.0 student, here in the USA. She's very good at doing what she knows she needs to do to pull a good grade. The thing is, she won't do anything more. No extra reading, no development of outside interests, etc. I'm pretty sure no matter what school she ends up going to in Thailand, she will get good grades. :)

The wife attends Rajabaht in Sakon Nakhon.

I don't think she likes it very much, half of the time the teachers don't even turn up.

She maybe looking to move to Kasetsart. It's a lot more expensive but hopefully worth it.

Had the same problem with the stepdaughter, not good enough for a first class Uni.Frequented Udon Rajabhat, had her (easy) degree,

that in Thailand is a necessity, now,as an adult young woman, she can make her choices.

Must admit I was relieved,my own daughter education costs were horrendous! :D
