I have seen alot of people have been suffering from the dreaded dodgy stomach bug while they have been away. I myself suffered this same fate at Christmas time. It put my on the sidelines for 3-4 days. For them 3-4 days all I did was having a sick feeling in my stomach and <deleted> my back out. I took immodium and then I went to see the doctor and he told me I should'nt be taking these because they kind of bung things up and stop the bug from getting out of your system naturally.

I am going to LOS in July and dont want to suffer again from the same thing, any suggestions of good medicine available on the net or in local chemists?

been reading a few things on the internet regarding ''travellers stomach'' they recommed a product called dukoral but the problem is I cant find it anywhere to purchase (I am in theUK). Another one I was looking at was Bio-Kult and this is readily available, just dont know which one is the best.

Wait until you get to Thailand. Find a pharmacy and buy about 10 tablets of Cipro, (ciprofloxacin) 500mg. At the first sign of stomach touble, take one tablet AM and PM until it clears up. It should only be a day or two, not more than three or four. If it's longer, see a doctor.

Drink Yakult (yoghurt drink with live cultures) every day for 10 to 12 days before you come and every day when you are here. It will build up your resistance to all that nasty s**t.

antibacterial drugs (e.g. ciprofloxacin) are generally unnecessary in simple gastro enteritis , even when a bacterial cause is suspected , because the complaint will usually resolve quickly without such treatment.

ciprofloxacin is occasionally used for prophylaxis against travellers diarrhoea but routine use is NOT recommended.

lactobacillus preparations ( yakult etc. )have not been shown to be effective.

the first line of treatment is oral rehydration to replace fluid and electrolyte loss.

ciprofloxacillin is a quinolone and one ( rare) side effect is tendon damage including tendon rupture occuring within 48 hours of starting treatment.

elderly patients , patients taking corticosteroids and patients with a history of tendon disorders should not take quinolones.

quinolones should also be used with caution in patients with epilepsy or other conditions that predispose to seizures , quinolones can cause seizures on their own or in patients taking nsaids at the same time (ibuprofen )

best to stay away from these tablets unless absolutely necessary.

My advice would be to not play around with ANY antibiotics unless you KNOW you need them. To many people don't know how to take them properly (like stopping when you feel okay) which can lead to resistance to antibiotics, an extremely serious problem in Thailand, and many other countries...

Do some research on the internet for foods that might help your runs, like bananas... Personaly, a Big Mac has always helped me. :o

too true.

with the proliferation of potentially fatal super bugs resistant to most antibiotics , and the inability of the pharmaceutical industry to come up with effective replacements it's only a matter of time before the era of simple cures using antibiotics comes to an end .

self medication for the pharmaceutically illiterate is a fools game.
