Hi my wife (Thai citizen) and I have a cute little girl (also a Thai citizen), and I understand there is a visa based on having a dependent.

What is the process to acquire such a visa?

There is no such visa. But you can obtain a non immigrant O visa to visit a Thai wife or child. You can also extend your stay 60 days. To extend further would require the normal 40k/400k financial requirements.

If in Thailand you can travel to Malaysia and get a one year non-o visa with a birth certificate and all the appropiate docs. That gives you a year. you can extend for another two months giving you 14 months.

It's got to be cheaper than an education visa.

You do not need ED visas. You can obtain non immigrant O visas - and they can be obtained in multi entry versions that are valid for a year of 90 day stays. Proof of marriage/child and perhaps an account with 30k in it at KL. Other places vary from no financial requirement up but in most cases it is not hard to obtain. The only thing missing without meeting the 40/400k level is avoiding the border runs - but many use them for a mini vacation or shopping trip.

Does the Thai Birth certificate need to be translated or do they take the Thai version in Malaysia?

Are the 90 day renewals done inside the country or are they border runs?

Don't know about the birth certificate, others can answer.

You would be on 12 month multi-entry visa, and that would means border runs every 90 days.

Can avoid if you meet criteria for extension of stay based on marriage/child (40k/month income or 400k Thai bank balance)

They are Thai people working at the Embassy or Consulate. The Thai version is perfectly fine. It is only documents in other languages other than Thai, that need to be translated into Thai.

Just curious why you would apply based on the birth certificate rather than a marriage certificate?
