If you have a 12 month multiple entry Non O Visa - after the first 89/90 days do you have to leave the country or can you get an extension at a local immigration office to get the next 90 days activated?? Thanks.

Multiple entry means just that: ENTRY is the keyword here. While the visa is valid you can enter as often as you want and get 90 days permit to stay. If you go to an immigration office in Thailand, is this a new ENTRY into Thailand?

You have to leave/enter Thailand every 90 days unless you qualify for some kind of extension of stay.

wouldnt the reason the visa was issued in the first place be the rason that you could qulaify for an extension of stay instead of leaving the country. i.e. if the visa was issued on the basis on staying with friends/looking for volunteer work, then isnt this still a valid reason after 90 days and so justify the extension?

I guess making you leave the country after 90 days just makes it harder to abuse the system!

Visiting friends is not a valid reason to issue except at a shrinking number of Consulates. To extend requires further restrictions as to financial/work/living requirements so even if it were a valid reason for visa issue the person obtaining may not qualify for extension of stay.

A visa gives you the right to apply for permission to stay. It does not guarantee you entry. Your can apply for extension of stay during the last 30 days of your permission to stay IF you meet the requirements relating to that stay (ie, working/married to Thai/retirement etc). Staying with friends or looking for work is not a valid reason to apply for extension of stay. But if you had multi-entry visa you could do 90 day border runs until that visa expired.

Normally you have to leave the country after 90 days in case your visa is issued outside Thailand. ( 30 day extension max )

The exception is the visa based on retirement.

People with Non O visa based on retirement issued outside Thailand can stay in the country for one year and do the 90 day reporting.

Hint : Do a visa run just before the expire date of your retirement visa and you receive another 365 day at the airport.

So you can stay almost 2 years in the country on one retirement visa. ( when issued outside Thailand )

Sorry, but your information is totaly incorrect. However well intended it might be, you mix up a lot of things and I can only advise people to ignore it.

You are talking about a Non-Immigrant O-A visa. That is not the same as Non-Immigrant O visa.

Mario isn't it possible for you mods to clearly mark posts with incorrect info as such, or even delete them (but notify poster)?

Many people do a search, find the post but don't bother to scroll further down in the topic. Following the incorrect info could lead to a lot of problems for them.
