Sukhumvit Apartment 700 Baht A Night.

I've just spent a few days at a long time Bangkok favourite, Tarit Court, Sukhumvit. Soi 27.

For 700 Baht a night I had a small apartment with a kitchenette, cable TV and free internet in a unique quiet garden atmosphere 100 meters off Sukhumvit and 5 mins from the Asoke/Sukhumvit BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway.

It was clean, comfortable with pleasant capable staff and it retains an excellent reputation with its long term tenants.

I will return and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reliable, safe, short or long term convenient rental apt.

Interesting info.

Do they have larger family rooms?

Or do they cater only to those requiring 'overnight guest' facilities?

Or are they the domain of the backpacker crowd?

Can you PM me some contact info.

I've never quite understood why people post info about places, without including some contact details? Website? Telephone number? E-mail address?

Surely BNZ...you must have gotten a business card or brochure?

Not singling you out BNZ. It seems to be common practice among all forum members to do this.

If you resd President Kyobashi's report at the bottom of the linked page you will note that he says the minimum stay is three months, so it is not for the casual traveler. :)

No business cards, brochures or websites have been neccessary for TC and the street directions given were accurate and easy to follow ..for most.

Not so, this policy has changed.

700 Baht PER night !

No service charge or tax.

No pool, Tarit Court is not a new building but it possesses a certain easy charm that it's quiet calm away from the bustle of Sukhumvit is relaxing enough.

I've been to Tarit Court to see the units a couple times. They are conveniently located, however, it is an old apartment complex which needs renovation, to put it kindly. Although it has been recently repainted, the rooms are tiny, the walls are very thin and the doors are of the cheap veneer type. However, the staff seemed quite friendly and the place does have a nice garden area, which gives the place a peaceful environment.

Friends of mine who are yoga instructors wanted a place closeby to their workplace, so I escorted them there solely because of the location. The woman there said she could give them a discount if all 4 of them signed up and actually offered me a commission, which I refused. Since Tarit Court is conveniently located, my friends decided that they would sign contracts to stay there. However, strangely the discount that was offered disappeared and the prices were raised from between 7000-7500 baht per month to 10,000 baht per month. They have since reconsidered staying there and I am helping look for a better place.

Even though the place is not well built, I thought the nice staff and the garden made up for it. Now, I would recommend anyone considering staying there long term to think twice before staying there.

Having read your post concerning Tarit Court I feel that, as a former resident, I could not stand idly by to see the good name of this establishment maligned by misinformed (and possibly irresponsible) persons.

Your post raised certain questions that should be addressed. However, in order to ensure that I myself am not misinformed, I alerted the owner of Tarit Court, Khun Panit, to have him clarify some of your assertions concerning 'discount, commission and price'. He indicated that he did not wish to engage in a verbal skirmish on the net, but would prefer to clear up your misunderstandings face to face. Nevertheless, I insisted that it is necessary to put matters straight since your remarks were posted in the public domain.

So here are my own replies and observations to your post but also including the clarifications I received.

1. ".. it is an old apartment complex which needs renovation.."

The ground floor was very nicely renovated in 2004 but you failed to notice ( "..to put it kindly.." ) and all rooms are repainted and/or wallpapered, etc., when vacated.

2. ".. the rooms are tiny, the walls are very thin and the doors are of the cheap veneer type. .."

Yes, 6 of the units are small 12 sqm rooms, tiny but efficiently designed to be self-contained, rented out at the lowest rate to provide a needed service in the bustling metropolis of Bangkok and are currently all happily occupied ..with no complaints. As far as I know, the walls are the same thickness as all other apartments I’ve been in.

3. ".. The woman there said she could give them a discount.."

The discount was offered on the condition an agreement was fulfilled as soon as possible for 1-year let. (Re # 4)

4. "... strangely the discount that was offered disappeared.."

The discount disappeared because in October the prospective tenants wanted to book four rooms starting from the 1st January next year 2010 ! Naturally the units could not be kept waiting for a couple of months. Tarit Court rents apartments as they become available and because of its popularity and limited space, cannot plan or book specific dates that far in advance unless immediate commitments are made with a holding deposit to prevent loss of opportunity.

5. "..and actually offered me a commission, which I refused. .."

As four rooms were required long term a small gratuity was indeed offered, actually in lieu of the discount, if a rental agreement was immediately committed. (Re # 4.)

6. ".. the prices were raised from between 7000-7500 baht per month to 10,000 baht per month. .."

Three 24sqm studio units were negotiated at 7,500 Baht ( less TV ) and one 32sqm one-bedroom unit at 10,000 Baht. There was no raising of tariff. Was something lost in translation, I wonder?

7. "..Even though the place is not well built.."

Exception is taken to this uninformed and grossly erroneous statement. Khun Panit is, in fact, a professional who received his Engineering Degree from Imperial College, London, one of the most recognized engineering institutions in the world. He has participated in the design and construction of a number of mega-projects including the MRT. Although the building was designed for another rental purpose and was later rather cleverly renovated to its present configuration, to my mind there is no question about the integrity of the building.

And your construction credentials are...?

8. ".. I would recommend anyone considering staying there long term to think twice before staying there. .."

Long term renters, many with more than ten years residency, as well as many of my acquaintances who return on an annual basis, have certainly proven this comment otherwise.

My intention was/is not to shill or tout for Tarit Court, but as I and many others have had pleasant experiences there I am troubled at publicly printed misinformation and misunderstandings.

The staff and the landscape designer (!) appreciate your compliments and certainly your efforts in recommending this aspect to customers but please don't futilely respond with more misinformation which only serves to malign a well liked Bangkok institution.

The aesthetics of the building may not be to your taste but that does not justify reckless, irresponsible, and false statements.

With fairness and full disclosure 'mauiguy90', it would also be appropriate for you to admit to an interest in a nearby hotel/guesthouse.

If you are still looking I can recommend a number of fair and accurately descriptive apartment sites.

You have apparently decided to side with the owner and as such are biased to believe whatever he has to say. However, the apartment appearance speaks for itself. Those that choose to look at the unit can decide for themselves how attractive and well built the units are. I will say that the lady I spoke to was very nice and had the impression that people liked the workers there. It is also well located, which is the reason I walked my friends to look at Tarit Court. However, just re-painting a room that is not well made does not make it an attractive place to live.

As for the details of the transaction, I don't believe that either you or the owner were there. Many statements you have made in your response are inaccurate or basically false. However, you choose to believe the word of a person who was not even there(owner, manager, etc). Most of the statements are so inaccurate that there is no sense in responding to them. The prices are listed on the internet as I quoted under mrroomfinder.com . They have remained unchanged since I visited with my friends. There was no agreement that my friends would take the room when I was there (and could not be made without the consent of their company.)

My friends are employees of a well known fitness place at Asoke. There was no problem until the fitness company contacted Tarit Court. The price went up significantly from prices I have mentioned and that are quoted on mrroomfinder.com . My friends returned there to clarify the issue only to confirm that the prices had been raised significantly, as their office had reported. I guess that whole thing is moot since they are no longer interested in living there for obvious reasons.

As for your statement about my interest in another apartment, that is totally ridiculous since I was the one who introduced my friends to Tarit Court since they were looking for a nearby location to their fitness company. In addition, I own nothing in the area nor do I have a relationship with another apartment complex.

I understand that there are many long term tenants there. You have a relationship with the owner and the people that work there. You choose to believe them no matter what I have stated. That is your choice. However, the prices that are listed on the internet, speak for itself. As I have previously stated, the appearance of the rooms speaks for itself. As another poster has noted that the rooms start at "12 sq. meters"--the value also speaks for itself.

I will say that the location is great and that it probably is a good value for overnighters. That's leave it at that!

It seems that you are the one that needs to relax BNZ. Don't know why you see this as a personal attack. I am just relaying what happened re: Tarit Court. And yes, I think the staff there is nice. As I said before, people can decide for themselves what they think of the accomodations. As I said before, let's leave it at that.
