cmsally
I believe some people made around 3-4000 Bt at the election. You don't have to be Einstein to work out that there were multiple candidates paying. I fail to understand why some people can't grasp that all sides pay in an election. There are even many that take the money and vote as they please. There are even many esp. in Tesabahn area wealthier areas that don't get any money at all. How on earth is the BKK establishment meant to clean up the country when they can't even do that in their own city? Surely that must be a joke! caf
How sad? Why is it sad? The Thais didn't want her. Get over it. ...didn't want her? Or were wrongly persuaded to vote for her opponent through typical red shirt/ Thaksin practices of corruption and vote buying? You obviously dont speak to the Thais I speak to. She lost because she had no creditable performances while mayor. Plenty of spin was produced but at the end of the day people asked what has she actually done. While the video did not help ( thais are very conservative) it was her past performance and attitude that did for her. Good posters and PR though. thaino1
How sad that Dr. Pong didn't win. I thought she was a very effective and responsible mayor during her short term. However I hae been informed by Thai people that she is featurd in porn videos on You Tube. Talk about "Dirty Politics'. My Thai companion always votes, but he votes NO for everyone. I gather this is to indicate his dis-satisfaction with Thai politics!! These people need to be educated. I know "jai yen yen". TIT!!! I agree with you 100%, Thais need better education system. People's attitude is going backward. I can tell you why, the teachers earn so little. The one of qualifications for the teachers the government required is who ever gratudated from Education field. Most of the graduated students from that field are the those who has lowest grade point average in the class. They become the teachers. Then you know what the result is. For mayoral election, it takes so long for Thais to think reasonably, not who is my friend.

WinnieTheKhwai
A bit of a free translation; apparently, in a school in CM, a man had 2 million Baht to pay for the number 2 votes. The police arrested the man and he confirmed he was there to buy the votes for number 2 (the winner, from red shirt). The winner (number2) told the police he did not know the “2 million Baht man” and never gave order to do so…. TIT… Still, a welcome and much needed signal to the establishment in Bangkok! Maybe they'll be shocked in to actually doing some work now.. And what is that signal? That no matter how hard the "establishment" in Bangkok tries to clean up the country, the criminal redshirts are going to continue buying elections? Well, reading the news item quoted for reference above, people with a security-mindset clearly now realize: "All it takes to eliminate the competition is 2 million baht and a dude in a shed claiming it's to buy votes for my competitor!" And hey presto, the puppet courts kick in, done deal. And TIT, I guess. Edited October 6, 2009 by WinnieTheKhwai

Maejo Man
Also a report in the paper we are not allowed to quote. The official results will not be known for two weeks as there are allegations of "vote buying" by the winning candidate. If proven,he will be disqualified. So what else is new in elections? Mestizo
Wanna guess who is openly wearing the Bright " Red Shirt " , now Irregularities were not even being tried to be covered up. I have lived here for 20 + years and still [and probably never will ] understand the mind workings of the Thai well as the old saying almost goes " yer gets paid yer money and yer takes yer chance" It is my firm belief that Thai's vote for "Who is best for me/ who is going to put the most money in my pocket" question in mind and not "Who is going to do the best for the city/province/country". No thought is given to the collective well-being and prosperity of the nation/ city/ group as a whole. This would explain how one of the most corrupt politicians ever (Thaksin), still maintained so much popularity up here. It also would explain why the rampant vote-buying of the redshirts/ TRT/ PPP remains the most successful election strategy. -Mestizo

Sao Jiang Mai
This election broke records. Normally handouts are 500 baht per household, this time it was 1000 baht per person! (I know of at least ten people wh ocame out of the election rather flushed!). They also confiscated ID cards only returning them at the front of the polling station (though I don;t quite understand why, as in the polling booth people can vote for whoever they want anyway), but maybe it is a psychological tactic. I really do hope that the new guy will, maybe, with his relative youth, bring something new to the table, and not be as cynical as my thoughts are about him. By the way he is not Boonlert or Pakorn's son, but the son of their eldest brother. Anyway, the die has been cast and all we can do now is support the mayor when he does something good and scrutinise him when its suspect. I try to be sour grapes about the whole thing. As many of you said, for whatever reason, he is the candidate of choice for CM people. And Dr Pang didn't produce a porn, a private video of her and her boyfriend was distributed by political enemies.

One of his first jobs should be (if he has any authority) is to paint out these narrow lanes and arrows that go against the regular flow of traffic. Loi Khoh is one and the steel bridge is another where if people take advantage of "driving what is essentially the wrong way" the realm's daily road toll will only increase. A monkey would have more brains than to have dreamed up that idea. Edited October 6, 2009 by john b good
