Selling Jewelry

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where I could sell some jewelry? I am not just trying to pawn some Thai street gold. I have some nice pieces (Tacori setting, platinum, etc.).

It depends where you are. I know a person up here in the sticks who makes custom jewelry and is always looking for loose stones, white gold etc. Look around your area and find out who is making custom jewelry. Good luck!

Thanks. I should have been more specific in retrospect. I'm in Bangkok. I guess my main problem is that I am trying to unload one ring in particular that gets most of its value from being handmade by a well known company. Outside of the West I should probably just give up on getting anything out of it other than its scrap metal weight :)

Ebay is always an option. I sell things all the time on Ebay. As long as you are registered in your home country you will not have a problem.

You may already know this, but when I took a variety of jewelry my wife bought in Thailand to be appraised in the U.S., the significantly higher appraisal (for replacement insurance) vs cost was explained in many cases by the labor. The stone and setting metal were appraised at less than the cost of the item, the appraisal of the item as a piece of jewelry was way more than the cost. So the difference had to be in the labor, so said the appraiser. Sounded reasonable to me.

On one particular piece with diamonds, the appraiser identified the diamonds as being Russian cut. Obviously (to me) the Russian diamond dealers would not sell cheaply to Thailand if they could get more in another country, so I expect the diamond cost was "world stable" plus or minus. With that piece, there was not a lot of labor in the mounting so, while the difference was still there, it was not as much.

So given that, yes, I would agree that a one of a kind piece probably won't get much here. You paid for a special order, paying extra for originality and extra for a reputation (which you implied carries no weight over here).

Good luck
