Hello,

It is almost impossible to get Trousers (both formal and jeans) in standard shops.

I only order from Ebay (which is costly with Shipping Price) or once in a while from HK.

Can someone suggest where to buy in Bangkok... any special place?

Here are the sizes: Inseam: 36in, Waist: 34in.

Total Length: from Waist Line to Bottom Most Ankle line: 47in.

Secondly, if you make trousers with Tailor.. What are the typical cost for material and stitching?

Big Trousers in Tourist Thailand!

(sorry, couldn't resist :) )

rule #1 DON'T GO TO AN INDIAN TAILOR, they just farm it out to a local Thai/Chinese sweat shop

Find a local in your neighborhood that does tailoring. It needn't be a fancy shop, just someone with a sewing machine and the skills to go with it. Bring in a pair of trousers you own, tell them you want them to make a pair of same. I hope your Thai language is good enough, if not arrange for a translator; if you have a Thai gf this is her chance shine. If the tailor is on the ball, they'll tell you how much fabric you'll need, also other cloth, like for pockets, lining, size of zipper, etc. You might have to put a little effort into learning a little about fabrics, but it'll be worth it in the end (if you have a Thai gf beware of the Asian lust for polyester!). Also, you can specify anything you wish, like add an inch here, take in an inch there, deeper pockets, secure back pockets, more belt loops etc. Beware that some of the women you see on the street with sewing machines don't really know that much about tailoring, they just do alterations like trouser lengths, etc. One way to tell is you go up to them and say you want a pair of trousers made. If the first thing they do is pull out a magazine and tell you to pick out a style, it means this person has experience making things from scratch. As to how good they are, well, if you don't know anyone who's used them, there's only one way to find out.

Last time I had something made was with a woman with a shop in the market in a smallish city. She made me a shirt and I think the tailoring alone was 300b (as I recall the whole operation was about US$20); I didn't bargain too hard because I wanted her to have a good attitude toward the assignment. It helped that she was right near the cloth sellers because she helped me pick out the fabric, buttons, thread etc. Translation help provided by a schoolgirl whose mother ran a nearby stall.

I lived in India a while back and this was the way to go, and I learned then that the glitzy-ness of the shop was inverse to the quality of the work. At one point a had an old guy in small town make me a suit. The tailoring alone was US$15, with no bargaining.

Be careful of tailors who also sell fabric. I wouldn't consider for a moment one of those places like in lower Sukhumvit, Pattaya, etc, or anyone who specializes in serving tourists.
