Another Car Gone

We hired out our Nissan Frontier to a customer we knew, she said she was going to pick her husband up from the Airport. It seems she drove straight down to Chong Chom and crossed the border and hocked it for 60,000 baht. We have just paid 66,000 baht to get it out. That's my Chemo money for this week down the drain.

What I really want to know is " Why can't you cross the border in a legal car? The car must be stolen before they'll let you across.

Her name and picture will be put on later.

Her name is Surivimon Poisson.............sounds French. Anyone know the husband?

Seems this isnt uncommon, a lady iknow in pattaya rented 2 cars to different thai women ( both married to farang ) ,they too crossed to poi pet and borrowed 100.000 on both cars ,the thai police got them back and wanted 200.000 which she had to pay, so if you ever see a rural cop in a bmw or similar know how they got it,. isnt thailand great,. :)

How did you get the car back???...if it was pawned in Cambodia....You obviously dont know this lady very well as you dont even know the nationality of her husband, and if you know her then you must know where she works/lives so go and get your money back. Take some guarantee in the future, passport, I.D card etc

Went to Chong Chom to pick it up. We had a copy of her i/d card and 500baht deposit. We do trust people, although it seems Thai people are only honest when people are watching. Although then again I can't imagine a Thai man carrying out this scam. It seems only the women are theives and liars.

I'm curious

How did you find out it was in Cambodia? Surely she didn't contact you and tell you!

You have a copy of her ID with presumably her home address on it. Send the lads down to sort her out!

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you FC.

The few car rental companies that I know here in Korat refuse to hire out a car to a Thai person. They will only hire them out to foreigners. I guess they must have had similar experiences.

Sounds like a good idea, but I'd take a copy of their passport, give that to them and keep the original.

That way they cannot get out of Thailand or back home easily.

Sure you might lose a few punters but its better than this sh!t.

Whenever I need to take the car out of the country ... I need a car passport (tabien rot) & the registration docs to prove it is mine and paid for, sounds as though collusion is needed with the officials to work this scam!

Why am I not surprised!

Thais dont need a passport to get into cambodia for the casinos,.and its very lax on taking a car in there also,(if a thai ).this is a well known scam involving the kymer casino owners and the thai police, the thai police will get the cars back into a compound across the border then release them to the rightful owner after payment,.

The thai police are notified by the casino owners then they in turn contact the registered keeper and ask " would you like your car back " ?

Sounds pointless reporting it to the local Police then. Someone higher up the foodchain is needed maybe?

You're right. I'll start with the Somtam lady on thecorner.

I can't help but wonder if the car ever entered Cambodia at all. It is very difficult to get a car legitimately across there. The last time I went to that boarder, there were plenty of scams and touts, sounds like a scam if you ask me.

Probably never went out of Thailand. I helped a friend in a simular pridecament and the covert exchange was all done at Chong Chom border market IN THAILAND. The poor ladies year old Ford Ranger was returned for 35k in a nearly undrivable state. So sad for this poor sole.

These people are the scum of the earth and should be locked up.

I crossed the border into Tachilek (Myanmar) last year with just a copy of my passport. When having entered Myanmar i realised this was a bad idea and went back to Thailand. No problems at all though. Bare in mind that Thai people don´t need a passport to enter Cambodia. At most crossings an ID card will do.

hey Martin,

What about installing a gps tracking device in the cars.

Then you can set a Geo field that the car can't cross or it will alert you.

You can login to the Ip address you choose and realtime track the car also,

Plus you can show the policeman where the car went, and then he maybe red faced if it never went into Cambodia.

I even seen one that you can record and monitor the voice sounds from the car.

They use a simple sim card to track with.
