I am in Phuket, near the northwest corner --- about 15 min ago (11:10) I felt a quake that was very similar to the one 2 hours before the tsunami hit. My TV is out --- anybody getting any info? Dario
Yes, I just saw it on the earthquake.usgs.gov website. Make no mistake: It is recorded with a 8.5 magnitude! That's almost as strong as the Dec 26th tremor! Have a look here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Qua...quakes_all.html Are we again the only ones realizing what is happening? Is the government on alert? Are they busy evacuating? Or are they again just doing nothing? Edited March 28, 2005 by Dario
PvtDick
It's only been a 20 minutes since it happened...they're probably deciding whether to evacuate or not (they've got a couple hours before a tsunami would hit).

autonomous_unit
Wow you guys are fast! I also experienced almost identical sensations to the December quake at our condo in BKK, Bangkoknoi. I am not sure if it was shorter though, or whether being in the evening meant I was less aware of when it began (on our floor, it is not so much shaking as strange noises from the structure). The December one seemed to continue steadily for at least 45 seconds, but this one I only noticed for 20-30 seconds at most.

thohts
Thai TV news is saying that it's now upgraded to 8.5 on the scale, which is a lot more than 8.2 since the scale is exponential. (About 2 gigatons for 8.2 and 5 gigatons for 8.5, if you want to use the TNT analogy) Edited March 28, 2005 by thohts

The USGS advised officials in the area to move people inland, and Thai officials were among the first to issue a tsunami warning for the Andaman Sea. No reports of injury or damage had been received from the region. The Dec. 26 quake that launched the massive tsunami was a 9.0, the USGS said.
