With triple entry visa, extensions and 2 border crossings in the middle you should be able to obtain nearly 9 months stay on your visa.

Vientianne (Laos) is the most popular embassy in the region to obtain new tourist visas, as they are currently issuing double entry free of charge. That position may of course change in the future. There is also a crackdown on back to back visas and you may care to look at the threads below.

You will not obtain multi entry Non-O visa on the basis of visiting friends in the region. The nearest consulate that will issue is Perth, but recent reports indicate need for ID of Thai gf. Anyone offering to obtain a visa for you whilst you are in Thailand is operating illegally, and any such visa obtained would be invalid.
