Making Christmas Dinner

Featured Replies

I'm going to be in Thailand over Christmas, and will have a kitchen with an oven, so I am thinking of making christmas dinner rather than going to one of the pubs in Bangkok like I normally do.

I would want to cook a chicken rather than a turkey, so I don't expect the meat side of things to be a problem (incidentally, anyone know where I could get a free-range chicken in Bangkok?).

I'm not so sure about potatoes, gravy, yorkshire puddings and vegetables.

Will I be able to get potatoes that are suitable for roasting?

Is bisto/oxo available?

Pre-made yorkshire puddings?

Suppose parsnips are out of the question?

If you have any experience, and/or can share any tips, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks :)

Hi,

I make Christmas dinner at home every third year (the other 2 are spent on Ko Sichang beach and Novotel Christmas lunch).

Anyway, you should be able to get the Yorkshire Pudding Mix and Bisto granules from Villa supermarket.

I personally find that the potatoes at Tesco Lotus are the best available for roasting but sometimes they do not have decent potatoes on the shelves.

Foodland always has a nice range of fresh vegetables (cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.) but there potatoes are too small for roasting.

another place worth checking for the fresh vegetables out is Macro.

I have no idea for the free range chicken or the parsnips but if you find the parsnips please pass on the info.

are you for real? it's scares the living beejesus out of me if people like you really exist. :D

Bisto / Oxo? Yuk! There's nothing better than homemade gravy from the drippings.

Hi,

Forgot to add, you can get the stuffing from Foodland but I'm not sure what flavours they have.

Tiger.

Naam,

I don't really understand your post.

Is this because he/she wants to be traditional or because he/she wants to cook something?

Regards,

Tiger.

Villa has some Paxo stuffing mixes. I have seen Waitrose parsnips and sprouts in the frozen section at Tops. You can get Bisto here but making your own with the juices is easy and you just need flour. Same goes for Yorkshire puds, make your own! If you change your mind about the chicken then frozen turkeys are easy enough to find in Villa or Tops as well.

M&S also gets some Christmas goodies, mince pies and christmas pud but I couldn't stomach the prices. I waited until a few weeks after Christmas and picked up a nice pud for about 20% of the regular price.

I have cooked Chrimbo lunch for the past three years and have always been able to get all I need from Villa, even parsnips.

If you want some more fancy stuffing then suggest checking out the food store at Central Chidlom

Thanks very much for your responses everyone.

Sounds like it's completely do-able, after all.

very constructive Naam. Not much different than a Thai going to Australia or England to study and asking "Can I get Mamma Noodles there?"

As for the OP, yes you can find all you need and more here, including free-range chickens. Aim for places like Villa, Foodland, Emporium, Paragon over the Tesco's and Big C's for better selection of imported / western ingredients.

LOL - If this scares you so badly, how the h*ll do you cope with any real situations in life?

To the OP: As Gibby said, make your own Yorkshire pudding. Look on the internet for the "James Beard Yorkshire Pudding" recipe. The ingredients are as basic as it gets, the results are great, and it's virtually foolproof. I find using a muffin pan to cook individual servings is preferable, but a cake pan works as well. Good luck with everything.
