wolfmuc Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Dear Readers, if you like rowing you should visit the Mabprachan Reservoir this weekend. The 12th Southeast Asian Rowing Championships 2009 will take place in Pattaya from Friday Oct. 16 till Sunday Oct. 18, 2009. Rowing starts on Friday 09.30hrs; the presentation ceremony will be held on Sunday 12.30hrs. More information: The Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand Would be interesting to see our thai-rowers fighting against Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, ... and the sun. Regards, W.
aussiechick Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Where is the start area? Want to see it but can't work out where it is. thanks
monty Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Lake Mabprachan. Coming from central Pattaya (Foodland), turn onto Sukhumvit direction Bangkok. At the first traffic lights, turn right onto Soi Siam Country club. Drive down this soi, roughly 8 km down the road there will be a sharp, 90 degree curve to the left (this is just past a popular golf bar called "the outback golf bar", recognizable by a big sign with a kangaroo, on the right hand side of the road). A few hundred meters past this curve you'll see an entrance gate on your left side, there will be a bunch of banners as well there (in Thai of course). There you can enter and you'll end up at the dam of the lake where everything is happening. If you are in the area, do follow the road a bit further (where the lake will be visible). There's a lot of bars, pubs and restaurants where you can have a decent meal and/or some liquid refreshments. From there you'll also be able to see the race, albeit a bit in the distance!
aussiechick Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Thanks monty! My friend here is a rower and she really wants to see this over the weekend. With some drinks thrown in as well!!!
wolfmuc Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 Maybe someone of you has more information about rowing in Thailand(rowing clubs, where and so on). Living in northern Thailand I only know there must be a rowing club in Chiang Mai. But didn't find out where. Nobody knows. - I only know that the thai national team has its trainings on Lake Mabprachan, Pattaya. I would appreciate any news about this subject. - Thanks. Have a good day in Pattaya. W.
aussiechick Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I was out at Lake Mabprachan today for the finals. Good crowd - but 3 non Asians only!! Myself, my friend and a Englishman whose daughter is on the Thai team. We were actually welcomed by the Vice Chairman of the Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand and thanked for coming to watch. It was part of the SEA Games being held in Laos but as they do not have a large enough lake for a 2klm race Thailand hosted the rowing. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam mens and ladies teams were all represented. It is a relatively new sport here and Thailand do need support. Good way to spend some time on a Sunday. Vietnam won over all but Thailand did well.
monty Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Good crowd - but 3 non Asians only!! Myself, my friend and a Englishman That's the problem, nobody knows about those events! Hence the thread I started here, 3 events at the lake in as many months, two of those events are rather big and certainly worth coming out for!
aussiechick Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 monty - I am with you - no matter what is happening the advertising is either totally in Thai or we find out about it after the event when you see the photos in one of the local newspapers! Ongoing project!!!!
