Often see cars on red plates, yes I know when cars are new, but have seen many on cars of all ages ..

Wondered is the Red plates from the Garage/Dealer/Tent, so if a car has no tax the dealer can do a test drive with the red plates? Like Trade Plates in the UK, or Red Plates in Germany..

Just one with a picture http://www.one2car.com/CarInfor/cardetails...aridx=I16090099

same site 2004 Nissan http://www.one2car.com/CarInfor/cardetails...aridx=H11090205

Seen many of different sizes and ages, OK many are Imports so maybe just imported? is what I always thought, but others one would think are Thai built..

One today was a Nissan old shape Frontier with the Thai Rung XCiter body with the red plates

Do a search here for "red plates" hare and you will be rewarded with a wealth of information, including a lot of conflicting information about motorcycles and the issuance/requirement for red plates. (For motorcycles, the consensus IMO is it depends on the province) Red plates are issued by the dealerships (I guess you call them "garages" in the UK) until the car is processed by the land transport department and new blue book and permanent white plates can be issued. Most dealerships..er...garages...in Thailand have test cars dedicated to test driving. I seem to recall them having proper white plates, but could probably be either. And there are multiple reasons why a used car could have a red plate as well. Usually they keep the old plates.

Having bought and sold a fairly good amount of bikes and cars I have never, ever had anyone keep the plate on a second hand sale..

Struggling to think of any reason why a used car would have a red plate (perhaps during pre registration for import but we all know how often that happens :))

Were you buying from a used car dealer or person?

If you buy a vehicle with spesial number, like the auctioned ones in Phuket, its common seller wants to keep this since he has payed 20k to 1 mill for it. Then the plate is replaced in DMV with white plate.

I have thai friends who drive for years on red plates. Avoid paying roadtax, and when selling a 3 year old beemer its like new, never been registered. :D Have a look at the classifieds in a major englishlanguage bkk paper we are no allowed to mention here in TV. Several years old cars with redplate ads.

Edit Forgot one common reson to drive with redplates. When a court order to repos financed car is issued, its common to remove white plates to make it hard for finance to find vehicle.

Yes already did that, but could not find what I was looking for...

Like pick up any Thai car mag and there are pages of Number plates For Sale, you see loads of cars with the colour background and black letters/numbers = private numbers... On the side of the road there is Diahatsu Mira with a pretty background and 1x letter and 1x number..

So wondered if the owners of these plates want to keep them, do you get a red plate? until a normal plate is made? This would make sense as to why one sees many older cars on red plates, but cannot find any info on the web... [maybe not typed in correct order]

My 2nd hand car I did all the registration myself bought out of province but was a normal Thai plate with the car, took 10 days for the new number to arrive.

Re Red Plates on new cars... my 1st new car was on red plates for 4 weeks, my new pickup was on red plates for 5 weeks, the son visiting her Mother that lives in the Village had his new pickup on red plates for 10 months !!

As I am on the look out for another car, want to know what happens if there is a interesting car for sale but the owner want to keep the plates.

Just go to the DMV where car is registered and get a new white plate, change reg no front page of book and in computer. Done in an hour. New white plates are already made. couple of hundred baht.

Both.. Always the plate was on the car and matched the book..

I can of course see how private plates would create an issue.. I have no idea how long it takes to get a 'new' white plate if a person keeps a private one.. I know it took less than 2 weeks to get a Phuket plate when I moved changwat on a car, plus I kept the CM plate on it until the Phuket one was issued.

Maybe the exception to the rule, however, my family always keep the plates as they are usually expensive "auspicious" plates purchased at auction such as กก-555 etc. I was looking in the papers last week and the Bangkok plated สส-5555 was going for 5,000,000B if I remember correctly.

Many thanks, yes paid 245 baht for the new plates, and was asked to go back when they were ready which was on the 10th day, may have been done?? or should maybe have taken a Thai speaker with me? but when I went back to collect the new number plates also had to pay for the new road tax [because of course different number] I bought the car with a brand new 1 yr road tax... The day I went to start the change of ownership and province the NEW road tax had not started, but on collecting the new number plates the road tax was 8 days of use.. They must make some sort of charge as the road tax is 2,300year + the government insurance, I was charged 1,740 baht.

Still the question [out of interest] why is a Nissan old shape Frontier with the Thai Rung XCiter body driving with the red plates + many others [NOT new] I have seen on the red plates?

Sorry if I hijack this topic I do know nothing at all about white or red plates on cars

for what reason you might have a red or white one but all the trailers I licensed in

the past few years have a red plate and none of them ever got changed to a white one

So why is that ? :)
