HIYA!

I want to go to Belize (a tiny country just south of Mexico) in early November. Looking for a cheap flight but everything is US$1300 and more. Flights from either BKK or Kuala Lumpur are about the same. Maybe I should consider US$1300 cheap but I'm shooting for something less than a US$1000. So I guess I should get creative.

Now I'm thinking to fly into Mexico or some other nearby country and go by land into Belize. Just Mexico has just over 20 international airports. I will do some searches from various cities here in SE Asia, and to various cities in Latin America.

But boy, if anyone has experience or ideas, or can refer me to someone who might be able to help, I'd really appreciate it. I don't fancy the idea of so much looking around. I'll do a little at a time, for sure.

I'm in Had Yai. I just thought, if I were living in BKK I could go talk with someone at the various Latin American embassies or restaurants. I could call some of them. I guess that's an idea, huh? It's all a bit overwhelming. So, a little at a time.

Someone suggested a boat from Singapore! It's a consideration actually. And, with Tiger Air having some sort of promotion for flights to and from Singapore, either a boat from there or a flight from there is an option.

Thanks much,

Troy.

Do you mean $1300 one-way? Because $1300 round trip is a good price!

The best alternative is to get the cheapest flight to LA and then bus it all the way, or bus it to Tiujuana and take a Mexican internal flight from Tiujuana on the US border to Chetumal on the Belize border, then bus it into Belize.

You absolutely will not get a lower fare than by flying first to LA. I just went through this research for a trek from Chiang Mai to Guadalajara, and there was a difference of hundreds of dollars. The bus service across Mexico is good, but you'll be riding for a very long time.

I agree. As there are no direct flights to South and Central America from Asia at present you really have to go via LA or SFO. LA is most likely cheaper.

Try Kayak, or Expedia.

Indeed, bouncing off the USA will be the cheapest airfare-wise.

From what I've seen the fare from SE Asia to east coast (or central) US cities don't cost much more than west coast destinations. If you were headed for Belize you could get a flight to Texas and then overland it the rest of the way. Houston is a big hub for Continental. Cross from the US at Brownsville, I think the nearest Big Town is Corpus Christi (but check the map). The gulf coast is a shorter route, did it myself some years back, you can enter Belize via Yucatan. The nearest Big Town along the coast is Tampico, maybe there are cheap local flights from there. Tuxpam maybe. But I'd say if you're not adverse to long bus rides definitely do the overland, always pay a few $ more for the better bus, it's worth it.

I would think that not many cities in Mexico would have flights connecting with Asia, except maybe Mexico DF. The rest deal with flights in the region. If you want to get just a little bit of Mexico before crossing to Belize look for flights to Merida. Yucatan is a nice place.

Hey

No answers to your post but another question (sorry to use your thread)

I have been put off by the prices to go to Belize/ Puerto Rico a year or so ago

I am travelling with a Thai, meaning that I would like to avoid trying to get a US visa (mind you I am not into visiting there either, no offence meant)

I am not keen on travelling to/through Mexico either (sorry I am getting a bit paranoid: too much Cnn and BBC maybe)

You are talking about a kind of cruise from Singapore: I have contemplated this option but, unfortunately, have never been able to find any indication of it

Can anyone elaborate? or lead me to a thread?

Thanks and sorry again for bumping in
